Excessive heat warning issued for Southern California |
The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for Orange County, with some regions expected to hit triple digits Wednesday through Monday. OC’s coastal areas will offer slightly cooler temperatures, but many will still climb into the 90s over the weekend. Anytime it gets this hot, there’s an increased risk of heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, particularly for those who are more sensitive to higher temperatures. As such, the Orange County Health Care Agency advises the following precautions: |

'Largest score decline' in reading for nation's 9-year-olds, first-ever drop in math |
New federal data reveals that 9-year-olds’ reading and math scores have declined significantly across the board since the start of the pandemic. The results show the largest average score decline in reading since 1990, and the first ever score decline in mathematics, the National Center for Education Statistics said. In other words, no group of high- or low-performing students was spared from a decline in performance by the pandemic and remote schooling. |

Thousands without childhood vaccinations unable to return to school |
Falling childhood vaccination rates during the pandemic meant that thousands of students were unable to start the school year on a campus because they did not have the immunizations required by the state. More than 1 in 8 California students ages 4 to 6 did not have their measles, mumps and rubella vaccination — one of 10 vaccinations California requires — before school started this year, according to the California Department of Public Health. |

LAUSD, CSBA and others call on Newsom to veto bill requiring schools to buy mostly US-grown food |
One day after the California Legislature passed Senate Bill 490, a bill requiring California K-12 schools, community colleges and California State Universities to purchase mostly U.S.-grown food for school-provided meals, Los Angeles Unified superintendent Alberto Carvalho, the California School Boards Association and others are calling on Gov. Gavin Newsom to veto it. In a statement Wednesday, the CSBA and others called the bill “well-intentioned, but harmful,” since it prohibits schools from purchasing agricultural products grown, packed or processed out of the country, with some exceptions. |

Reading and math scores fell sharply during pandemic, data show |
Math and reading scores for America's 9-year-olds fell dramatically during the first two years of the pandemic, according to a new federal study — offering an early glimpse of the sheer magnitude of the learning setbacks dealt to the nation's children.
Reading scores saw their largest decrease in 30 years, while math scores had their first decrease in the history of the testing regimen behind the study, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, a branch of the U.S. Education Department.

Vaccines for teens without parental consent? Not this year, as bill is pulled |
A highly contentious bill intended to allow some California teenagers to be vaccinated without parental consent has been shelved by the author, who said there were not enough votes to get it through on the final day of the legislative session.
San Francisco Democratic Sen. Scott Wiener’s bill, SB 866, was one of several bills that grew out of a legislative Vaccine Work Group created to focus on bills related to COVID-19 and vaccination.

More kids are repeating a grade. Is it good for them? |
As Braylon Price remembers it, he struggled with pretty much everything the first full school year of the pandemic. With minimal guidance and frequent disruptions, he had trouble staying on top of assignments and finishing homework on time.
It was so rocky his parents asked for him to repeat sixth grade — a decision they credit with getting him on a better track.
