Dual-immersion programs show promise in fighting enrollment declines |
When 6-year-old Mia Truong started reading and writing in Vietnamese in addition to English, her parents knew they had made the right decision for kindergarten. Mia’s family lives in San Jose, within the Mt. Pleasant Elementary School District. But her parents decided to send her to a different school district, Franklin-McKinley, so that she could attend a Vietnamese dual-immersion program. |

Teens may soon have access to updated Covid-19 booster shots |
Updated Covid-19 booster shots may soon be available to teenagers and adults as the Food and Drug Administration plans to authorize the new shots near Labor Day, according to CNBC. Pfizer is currently seeking authorization for those 12 and older, while Moderna is seeking authorization for adults. The updated shots are aimed at combating the BA.4 and BA.5 omicron subvariants in addition to combating the original strain of Covid-19. The vaccine would be administered in a single shot. Once the FDA signs off on the vaccines, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will also have to do so. |

Teachers Will Boycott First ‘Optional’ Day Of LAUSD’s Extended School Year, Union Says |
Teachers union members will not show up for an optional day of extra classes the Los Angeles Unified School District scheduled later this fall, union leadership announced in a statement Friday. The call by United Teachers Los Angeles for a boycott of the October 19 “acceleration day” threatens to undercut an effort championed by LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho to provide extra on-campus time for students who have struggled to keep up academically since the pandemic’s onset. |

After-school care lacking in California's ambitious expansion of transitional kindergarten |
Sara LaPietra and her husband Vince thought they’d won the childcare equivalent of the lottery. Their four-year-old son Teddy got a spot in their local school’s transitional kindergarten, or TK, class. That meant they could stop paying $2,000 a month for his preschool, and the speech and occupational therapy Teddy receives would be on site at McKinley Elementary near Balboa Park. Unfortunately, the lottery ticket turned out to be a dud. While Teddy had a spot in TK, he didn’t get a spot in after-school care. That meant the LaPietras would have to pick him up from TK at 2 p.m. every day, and noon on Wednesdays — impossible given their work schedules. |

Survey reveals extent that cops surveil students online — in school and at home |
When Baltimore students sign into their school-issued laptops, the police log on, too.
Since the pandemic began, Baltimore City Public Schools officials have tracked students’ online lives with GoGuardian, a digital surveillance tool that promises to identify youth at risk of harming themselves or others. When GoGuardian flags students, their online activities are shared automatically with school police, giving cops a conduit into kids’ private lives — including on nights and weekends.
