New classes of elementary and middle schoolers filled the halls of Solis Park School in Irvine on the first day of school Thursday, Aug. 18, breaking in the latest — and, for now, last — new campus to be built in the city. The 108,000-square-foot campus will serve the residents of the Great Park Neighborhoods. It’s Irvine’s fifth kindergarten through eighth-grade school and the final school campus the city has planned, said Irvine Unified School District spokeswoman Annie Brown. |

OC Board of Education unusually divided over new trustee pick |
It took nine nominations and six different votes before Orange County Board of Education members agreed attorney Jorge Valdes would join them as their newest colleague on the dais. The four-member board — which typically votes in sync on nearly everything — deadlocked repeatedly on Wednesday, Aug. 17, with three abstaining at different times. Three candidates applied to take the spot left vacant by Beckie Gomez, who resigned effective July 1.The candidates were Valdes, a Tustin resident and workers compensation defense attorney; Cecilia Iglesias, a former Santa Ana councilwoman and Santa Ana Unified School Board member; and Tustin resident Marlene Barba, who works in church ministry. |

Trustees Consider Resolution Calling for Local Control over COVID Guidelines, Push Final Vote to September |
Though statewide COVID-19 restrictions have not been in place in California for some time, pandemic protocols were again the topic of discussion during a Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 17. The board on Wednesday did not take any action on proposed measures addressing health guidelines, but it is expected to vote on a resolution at a Sept. 21 meeting that calls for local control of school COVID-19 guidelines, which are currently set by the California Department of Public Health. |

Newsom announces plan to reimagine mental health and substance abuse services |
Gov. Gavin Newsom was in Fresno on Thursday to announce the state’s $4.7 billion investment in mental health and substance abuse services for children and young people, which he hopes will eventually lead to less need for crisis care, and instead focus on early intervention.
Speaking at McLane High School, Newsom said the goal for California’s Master Plan for Kids’ Mental Health is to train 40,000 more behavioral health professionals over the next few years, and establish universal screening and support services for everyone zero to 25 years old.
Those who work for at least two years as a counselor or other mental health professional would be eligible for student loan forgiveness.

Teachers union considers boycotting LAUSD’s voluntary learning day for students |
The union representing Los Angeles Unified teachers is weighing whether to ask its members to boycott an extra day of work planned for October, in a dispute over whether district officials had the right to tack on four days of voluntary paid teaching aimed at helping children who fell behind during the coronavirus pandemic. The so-called “Student Acceleration Days”, scheduled for four Wednesdays during the school year, are voluntary for both students and teachers, and are intended to help students who struggled academically during the pandemic to catch up. Teachers aren’t required to work these days, and those who do will receive extra pay. |
