Orange County students win top honors at National History Day contest
Eleven students from Orange County were recognized for their historical reports, exhibits and websites at the National History Day National Contest. The Irvine Unified School District was widely represented at the national contest, with seven category finalists and two top prize students.

California will not bring back mask mandate for the new school year
California kids will be allowed to go to school without face masks when classes resume in the fall. But public health officials, while not requiring them, still will be recommending face coverings for students and staff in an effort to prevent COVID-19 outbreaks at K-12 schools.

Fiscal watchdog says San Dieguito Union High School District at financial risk
A recent report from California’s school finance watchdog, the Fiscal Crisis Management and Assistance Team, called out several weak financial practices that put the San Dieguito Union High School District at risk of fiscal insolvency, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported Tuesday. The San Dieguito Union High School District serves about 12,700 students at 10 middle and high schools in Northwest San Diego County.

Azusa Unified embraces free breakfast, lunch for all students
Azusa Unified School District has announced that for the second consecutive school year it will offer free breakfast and lunch to all students regardless of income status. The California Universal Meals Program (AB 130) was signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom in July 2021 and will begin this coming school year. Operating under a CEP (Community Eligibility Program), no meal applications will be required. But Azusa Unified is requesting and encouraging parents and guardians complete an alternative household income form — one per household — which will be available online sometime in early August.
