COVID-19 update: CDC says vaccinated people should wear masks indoors where transmission is high
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now recommending that fully vaccinated people wear masks indoors in public if they’re in areas with substantial or high transmission. That includes Orange County, which is home to high transmission, and most of California, according to the CDC’s COVID Data Tracker. The CDC, which had relaxed its masking recommendations for fully vaccinated individuals in May, said it was now changing course to maximize protection from the rapidly spreading Delta variant. The California Department of Public Health, which sets the rules for the state, was reviewing the new federal language, according to the Los Angeles Times.

New group clashes with O.C. Board of Education over ethnic studies
On the same day that more than 200 residents met for an Orange County Board of Education forum on ethnic studies, a new group gathered to say it will push back against what they termed the board’s “misinformation” and “lies.” Members of “Truth in Education” on Tuesday said their group was formed to counter the Orange County school board’s opposition to ethnic studies and critical race theory. They also said they will emphasize the importance of teaching ethnic studies, not just in Orange County but nationwide.

OC Board of Education Hosts Forum as Heated Debate Over Ethnic Studies Continues
Orange County educators, parents and students continue to battle over ethnic studies courses being incorporated or expanded in local school districts’ curricula — with some saying it’s too divisive, while others say it’s time for a reckoning on U.S. history. Ethnic studies classes have been the subject of a national fiery debate in recent months that has educators, lawmakers, parents and students at odds over how U.S. history should be taught in K-12 schools and what has been left out. The classes are designed to teach the history, the culture, the plight and the contributions of people of color in the United States, according to academics who specialize in the course.

Cardona says schools must work harder to convince families to return
Schools across the United States will need to “work twice as hard” to convince some families to return their children to school in the fall, U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona told The 74 in an interview. Cardona said that level of effort will be necessary to rebuild trust with those families after a school year of mostly distance learning and delays to reopening in-person classrooms, The 74 reported.

Schools can use their American Rescue Plan funds to improve air quality in classrooms, the U.S. Department of Education announced Tuesday. Schools can use their federal funds to upgrade ventilation systems, purchase filters and fans, make repairs, conduct inspections and tests, and take other steps to improve air quality as students return to in-person classes. Note To LAUSD Parents: The Deadline To Opt Out Of In-Person Schooling Is Fast Approaching
Next month, Los Angeles Unified School District campuses will fling open their gates for, officials hope, a full year of in-person learning. That means “full-day instruction, five days a week” for kids who spent the better part of last school year learning remotely as the pandemic — which is still with us — forced schools to shut down. Are you ready for that, LAUSD parents? If not, you have until the end of this week to let the district know your students will be staying online.
