Poway Unified fired its superintendent for allegedly interfering in investigation related to her daughter
A newly disclosed record reveals what ultimately led to former Poway Unified Superintendent Marian Kim Phelps’ firing at the end of April: The school district found she had inappropriately interfered with a school investigation into a student accused of bullying her daughter. Phelps had requested the investigation and demanded information from district employees about the probe as it was ongoing, Poway Unified school board President Michelle O’Connor-Ratcliff wrote in an April letter to Phelps explaining why she was going to be fired. Phelps also lied that she had not requested an investigation, not made threats toward students and not interfered in the investigation, O’Connor-Ratcliff said.

California ranks bottom third in overall child well-being, per new report
California’s children rank in the bottom third of all states in overall well-being, according to a new report released this week. The authors of the report, “2024 KIDS COUNT Data Book: State Trends in Child Well-Being,” found that over half of California’s 3- and 4-year-olds are not in school, less than one-fourth of its eighth graders are proficient in math, and a greater number children and teens per 100,000 died than in previous years.

Keeping children fed during summer break
As summer begins, the meals many students receive through school are no longer an option, creating a financial struggle for families who now have to add those meals to their grocery budgets. In response, the Second Harvest Food Bank in Orange County partnered with Meals on Wheels to expand its free Summer Food Service program. Through the program, anyone up to 18 years old in Orange County is eligible to receive a free snack and lunch at any of the 46 participating locations.

At age 50, National History Day keeps pushing students to seek difficult truths through research
It wasn’t your typical trifold poster board display. High school freshman Alexandra Bui constructed a jumbo mail-order catalog replica from wooden sheets — an inventive, oversized way to convey her research on the Sears catalog’s impact on getting consumer goods to Black shoppers who faced in-store discrimination in the Jim Crow South. Bui, of Temple, Texas, is one of half a million young scholars taking part in this year’s National History Day, a Maryland-based nonprofit’s annual campaign that encourages students to take ownership of their history educations and rigorously examine the past. As the 2024 edition marks 50 years of championing evidence-based argumentation, participants say they find the work more relevant than ever.

Rams combating chronic absenteeism with Loads of Love program
The Los Angeles Rams are tackling chronic absenteeism in under-resourced communities by offering new clothing to motivate students to attend school. Their Loads of Love program, in partnership with PacSun and the THINK WATTS Foundation, also will donate washer and dryer sets to 20 local schools. This initiative aims to address the deeper issues that contribute to absenteeism, such as the lack of clean clothes, by providing both the means to maintain hygiene and the motivation to participate in school life.

‘We are not closing’: North Oakland Community Charter School files lawsuit against OUSD
School leadership and families gathered in the atrium of the North Oakland Community Charter School on Tuesday to announce a lawsuit against Oakland Unified School District and its decision to revoke the school’s charter. The lawsuit, filed in Alameda County Superior Court one day after the OUSD board voted to revoke the charter, claims that OUSD is violating the state’s education code by circumventing the normal charter revocation process and that NOCCS has met the academic goals outlined in a 2019 agreement to keep the school open.

Fiscal advisors say SFUSD must plan job, program cuts
Fiscal advisors told the San Francisco Board of Education this week that The City’s school district will have to cut programs and lay off workers — in addition to already planned school closures — to stave off a possible state takeover. The San Francisco Unified School District is staring down a $420 million deficit at the start of the 2025-26 academic year in the absence of such measures, and state auditors said last month that the system has a high risk of bankruptcy.
