A blast from the past: seniors return to their elementary schools for ‘grad walk’ |
High schools throughout the county are helping remind elementary school teachers of their positive impact on students while honoring graduates at the same time.
Noel Aguiar, a senior at Santa Ana High School, recently returned to Carver Elementary School to surprise his former teacher, Mr. Kevin Gallagher. Aguiar arrived in full cap and gown, a testament to his success in large part due to his favorite elementary teacher. “Mr. Gallagher was one of the biggest parts of my childhood,” Aguiar fondly remembered in a video posted on Carver Elementary’s social media. “He was really important.”

California is struggling to meet some of its education goals due to teacher shortages |
The state of California might struggle to meet its bilingual education and transitional kindergarten goals as a result of teacher shortages, KQED reported. “There are enormous numbers of dual language learners in California, and taking advantage of those children’s languages and helping them develop them fully is going to be a really big lift,” Conor Williams, a researcher at The Century Foundation, told KQED. “Could the state do more? Absolutely.” Almost 60% of California children under 6 years old live in households where a language other than English is spoken. Those same students, who are more likely to be low income, also benefit the most from transitional kindergarten. |

Research casts doubt on proposed legislation ending teaching performance assessments |
A bill wending its way through the California State Legislature could remove a valuable tool to evaluate teacher preparation programs, according to research conducted by the Learning Policy Institute, a nonprofit research organization headed by State Board of Education President Linda Darling-Hammond. Senate Bill 1263, sponsored by the California Teachers Association, would do away with teaching performance assessments (TPA), which require teachers to demonstrate competence via video clips of classroom instruction, lesson plans, student work and written reflections on their practice before they can earn a preliminary teaching credential. The legislation could also remove the last test that teachers are required to take to prove they are prepared to teach. |

LBUSD grapples with $44M deficit amid state, federal reductions |
The Long Beach Unified School District is in the red this year and will have to dip into its budget reserves for the first time in 11 years, officials said. The roughly $44 million shortfall expected in 2024-25 is a result of declines in attendance and enrollment since 2022, and reduced funding from the state and federal government. A deficit of close to $54 million is also anticipated in 2025-26. The Board of Education held a public hearing on the proposed 2024-25 fiscal year budget on June 5, with a vote to approve the spending plan expected on June 18. |
