OC high schoolers get a jump on cybersecurity careers following summer academy
A year ago, senior Michael Collins hadn’t really given much thought to the world of cybersecurity. Now, it’s a potential career. “Cybersecurity is really outside-of-the-box thinking,” said Collins, who attends Trabuco Hills High School in the Saddleback Valley Unified School District. “It forces you to think like an attacker, to try to find holes in your own solution in order to improve it and constantly make it better.”

High school students experience graphic mock DUI crash as a safety message
The same traffic collision has happened 120 times in Orange County. The first time, back in the late 1980s, two people were killed and three were injured. The next 119 times have been a simulation to teach high school students about the dangers of drinking and driving. This week’s crash happened outside Santa Margarita Catholic High School. The scenario had high schoolers driving home from a post-prom party where they were drinking. Some of the 23 students who participated were made up to look dead, complete with blood splattered on the roadway.

Updated TK-12 Covid-19 guidelines go into effect Wednesday in Los Angeles County
Students who have been exposed to Covid-19 but have not shown symptoms are required to wear their masks indoors for 10 days after the exposure beginning Wednesday, according to updated guidelines from the Los Angeles Department of Public Health. The department has also altered the definition of close contacts, which could require full indoor classrooms to mask as a result of exposure. The move comes as the number of Covid-19 cases across the county continues to rise, in part due to a new omicron subvariant.

Students speak out against potential loss of constitutional rights over abortion
The possibility of Roe V. Wade being overturned is yet another lesson for high school students who continue to experience history-making changes in real time. Dozens of students at San Diego High School attended a rally and groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday for the school’s modernization project. San Diego Unified School District has a new 99-year lease with the City of San Diego, allowing for a complete renovation of the historic campus. “To think that we’re going to restrict a woman’s right to choose is just disgusting and immoral,” said Zachary Patterson, the student member of the Board of Education. Patterson was among the crowd at the groundbreaking ceremony and he had plenty to say about the leaked Supreme Court draft ruling over abortion.
