Texas shooting: Southern California schools step up defenses against modern threat
During the Cold War in the 1950s, Bert the Turtle showed school children how to protect themselves from an atomic attack in the nine-minute film, “Duck and Cover.” Some 70 years later, school children are still performing duck-and-cover drills, but now the enemy is different. And so, too, are the measures that school districts are taking to keep children and employees safe — safe from attacks from disturbed, weapon-wielding people.

Longtime Laguna Beach educator Chris Duddy has died
Chris Duddy, a longtime educator and principal at El Morro Elementary School in Laguna Beach, died suddenly on Tuesday, May 24, Laguna Beach Unified district officials announced. He was 57. “We are deeply saddened to inform you that our beloved principal, Mr. Chris Duddy, passed away last night in his sleep. Mr. Duddy has been an incredible partner and leader in our El Morro family and Laguna Beach Unified School District,” Superintendent Jason Viloria said in a statement sent out to the district community on Wednesday. “This is incredibly shocking news to share, and we are all working diligently to support our El Morro teachers, staff and students. We also share our deepest sorrows and sympathy with Mr. Duddy’s wife, children and family.”

Los Angeles Unified moves to strengthen safety protocols in light of Texas shooting
Los Angeles Unified is expanding its safety protocols in light of the mass shooting that occurred at an elementary school in Texas on Tuesday. The district is evaluating extra measures as well as reevaluating current mental health offerings.

Students from across California share experiences with campus gun violence
Since the Columbine school shooting in 1999, more than 292,000 students have faced gun violence in their schools. As of May 24, 2022, there have been 27 school shootings in the U.S. this year, according to Education Week’s school shooting tracker. Most recently, on May 23, 2022, a gunman entered Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, killing 19 children and two teachers in what is the deadliest school shooting in America since the 2012 Sandy Hook mass shooting.

Health Experts Recommend Masks And Rapid Tests For Safe Graduation Gatherings
Despite Los Angeles County’s high COVID-19 transmission rate and around 4,000 reported cases a day, officials haven’t renewed restrictions at large gatherings such as graduations. Instead, health officials are calling for individuals to choose masking and testing on their own. Outbreaks of three or more cases related to the end of the school year are already on the rise.

Laguna Beach school community remembers beloved El Morro principal
A crowd of at least 200 parents, students, teachers, and school staffers gathered Wednesday evening at Laguna Beach High School to grieve for El Morro Principal Chris Duddy, who died in his sleep Tuesday. Duddy served Laguna Beach schools for 24 years, 17 of which were at El Morro Elementary. The 57-year-old educator was slated to retire June 30. School staffers and families gathered under overcast skies on Guyer Field to remember Duddy’s warm smile and sense of humor.

Years of renovation work were marked complete, May 2, as California Job Challenge held a ribbon cutting ceremony to open its facility on Joint Forces Training Base, Los Alamitos. As an in-residence career technical education program for graduates of other National Guard Youth Challenge Programs in California, the California Job Challenge building includes male and female dormitories capable of housing 40 students each, laundry facilities, a computer lab, recreation area, and classroom for students completing their high school educations through dual-enrollment at Long Beach City College and the Orange County Department of Education’s College and Career Preparatory Academy.

Grade inflation ‘persistent, systemic’ even prior to pandemic, ACT study finds
High school grade point averages have been on an uphill climb since 2016. But that doesn’t mean students are better prepared for college-level work. Their scores on the ACT, a college entrance exam taken annually by 1.7 million students, haven’t budged, according to a report released earlier this month.
