Why summer school in California will prioritize fun and reconnecting students
Merced County Office of Education students will hike through a wildlife preserve, fish in the Merced River and take sailing lessons from a local yacht club as part of this year’s summer school program. Elk Grove Unified students have the option to learn to act, sing or perform slam poetry. San Francisco students can take archery at a local park or classes in a high-rise downtown building that is usually home to tech workers. Although school districts are still offering academic programs, summer school this year is supposed to be fun.

Civil Rights Leaders Press LAUSD To Protect Students Against Anti-Asian Bullying
As the pandemic lifts and campuses plan to fully re-open in the fall, leaders in the AAPI civil rights community are pushing the Los Angeles Unified School District to use the summer to prepare against more bullying incidents. Coalition member Donna Tang of Asian Americans Advancing Justice-LA said she’s concerned that anti-Asian harassment will spike as classrooms fill up again and that targeted students won’t report such incidents.

NAEP science scores down for fourth-graders, flat for older students; are reading challenges to blame?
Today’s announcement of science scores from the 2019 round of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) provides more evidence for two ugly trends in the test often referred to as the nation’s report card. As with other results from the past few years — including assessments in social studies last year and the core subjects of math and English in 2019 — scores for all age groups are either flat or down from 2015, the last time the test was given. And declines in performance are largely driven by students achieving at the lowest levels.
