A sneak peek at school district summer learning programs |
As the end of an anything-but-normal school year draws near, Orange County districts are making plans to offer summer accelerated learning programs designed to help students’ with everything from enrichment to grade recovery to mental health.
While summer school is certainly not a new concept for school districts, the pandemic has exacerbated the need for extended learning that goes beyond credit recovery. So, summer programming looks a little different from what’s been offered in past years.

Schools across California become pop-up vaccination sites |
Fifteen-year-old Felipe Caceres isn’t fond of shots and needles. But when his school district in Davis opened a vaccine clinic for students his age, he quickly hopped in line.
“We don’t know everything, and there’s always a possibility you could get sick, but the goal is to be safe,” said Caceres, who is the last in his household to get a vaccine. “I’m a little nervous, I’m not that good with shots. But this is for the greater good.”

Schools Are Dropping Mask Requirements, But A New CDC Study Suggests They Shouldn’t |
New research released Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reinforces an old message: COVID-19 spreads less in schools where teachers and staff wear masks. Yet the study arrives as states and school districts across the country have begun scaling back or simply dropping their masking requirements for staff and students alike. With the majority of school-age children still too young to qualify for vaccination, Friday's research is the latest salvo in a simmering fight between public health officials and politicians — with parents lining up on both sides.

Parents and students rally for Laguna Beach USD to nix proposed schedule change |
More than 60 Laguna Beach parents and students waived colorful signs and chanted at Park Avenue and Legion Street on Friday to protest a proposed academic schedule for the Laguna Beach Unified School District. Many of the protestors were frustrated with the so-called “4 by 4” model that would enroll students in four courses per semester for the 2021-22 school year, rather than the usual six courses. Students would also need to complete each course in a semester instead of the usual practice of an entire school year.

Parents, students and families rally for a "seat at the table" |
The last year held unprecedented challenges for parents, students and families. LAUSD families like Watts grandmother Lydia Friend and her grandkids, 11-year-old twins Marlie and Marlon, have been juggling everything from work to sleep in order to make it possible for them to keep learning. On Sunday, Lydia and her friends from the Fabulous Sisters community group went Downtown and were part of the LAUSD rally, where parents and families were calling for “a seat at the table,” speaking out against the current LAUSD board and demanding kids go back to full-time, in-person learning next fall.
