LAUSD leaders express worries on budget, spending |
Los Angeles Unified says it’s facing difficult choices as enrollment continues to steeply decline across the district. At Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole, LAUSD said it will reassess staffing and funding for programming in light of the decline and current financial realities. Though enrollment has dropped by 70,000 students over the past five years, 10,000 positions have been added since then. Superintendent Alberto Carvalho made it clear at Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting that the current overstaffing would not result in layoffs. |

Oceanside Police recognizes persevering students by sending them to prom |
El Camino High School Senior Donte Ingram got pulled out of dance class on Tuesday morning. The principal led him out front of the school to meet two Oceanside police officers. Ingram thought he was in trouble — but instead, he found out his school had nominated him for a special recognition. “We know you’ve been working hard and trying to hang in there and getting through everything that you’re getting through. We’re really proud of you. So, you’ve actually been nominated by your school. So, on behalf of Oceanside Police Department, we’re going to help you get to prom. We’re giving you $250. So, hopefully you have a good time,” said Oceanside police officer Jamal Daniels. |

Los Angeles Unified predicts accelerating enrollment decline |
Leaders of the giant Los Angeles Unified School District have been told that enrollment is expected to significantly decrease over the next decade.
The latest prediction in the ongoing decline was presented to the Board of Education in a budget workshop Tuesday. The outlook comes as the district faces decisions on use of historically high education funding that is expected to be temporary and negotiations with the teachers union, the Los Angeles Times reported. Enrollment in LA Unified peaked at about 737,000 students two decades ago and has declined over the years to about 430,000 K-12th graders currently.
