OCDE makes surprise visits to announce the 2023 Orange County Teachers of the Year

Over the span of six hours, Orange County Superintendent Dr. Al Mijares, along with camera crews, reporters, sponsors and a handful of OCDE representatives on a big yellow bus called the “Prize Patrol,” visited six different campuses to recognize the 2023 Orange County Teachers of the Year.

These 6 educators are OC’s newest Teachers of the Year
When an announcement went out over the loud speaker at Beckman High School on Tuesday that Orange County Superintendent Al Mijares and Tustin Unified district officials were making a campus visit, science teacher Tracy Dawson assumed some sort of school drill was to follow. But a peek out the window revealed the familiar faces of her siblings, nieces, nephews and parents. “I was like wait, wait, wait,” she said minutes after being surprised with the news she is one of the county’s six 2023 Teacher of the Year recipients (60 were nominated).

Who Should Voters Trust to Run Orange County’s Board of Education?
Orange County voters are about to pick a new majority on the county board of education, and the race has picked up a lot more focus than usual. In previous elections, board members largely flew under the radar as communities focused on their own local school districts. But over the past two years, several votes by the board majority have catapulted the panel into the local and even national spotlight, making headlines across the country for rejecting the use of masks in schools, and suing Gov. Gavin Newsom over mask mandates.

Sacramento City Unified could extend school year a week to avoid state fine following strike
For students at the Sacramento City Unified School District, the current school year could be one week longer. The district plans to make June 16 and 17 full days of instruction and add the week of June 20 to the calendar to finish the year, according to the latest proposals from the Sacramento City Teachers Association and the district. Their suggestions are aimed at recovering the 2,400 instructional minutes students lost in late March and early April due to a district employee strike that lasted eight days. Per California law, the lost time — if not made up — could result in the district paying a $47 million fine to the state.
