OCDE’s Inside the Outdoors extends Earth Day into May with #ProjectZeroWasteLunch challenge |
While every day is Earth Day for OCDE’s Inside the Outdoors program, we set aside one day a year — April 22 — as a reminder to take better care of our planet. But this year, OCDE’s environmental education program is partnering up with OC Waste & Recycling to launch a special zero waste challenge during the month of May. Dubbed #ProjectZeroWasteLunch, the challenge is calling on elementary, middle and high schoolers to showcase how they are reducing waste during lunch time by using one or all of the ‘5 R’s — Refuse, Reuse, Rot, Repurpose, Recycle.

Estancia High drama students’ musical about workers hits screens April 29 |
A firefighter. An actor. A teacher. A healthcare worker. Those are some of the jobs that students at Estancia High School will pay tribute to in their upcoming school play, an adaptation of “Working: A Musical.” A hodgepodge of vignettes about workers in America, the production seemed to present the perfect message for the times, director Amber Marroquin said. The student cast members recorded their scenes in front of a green screen, and the bits were then patched together using editing software.

As California schools reopen to in-person instruction, students and families decide if it's right for them |
Across California, schools are opening their doors again, a first step toward rebounding from the pandemic. But for most students in EdSource’s families project, life remains far from normal. Some are having trouble navigating new school schedules and routines, forgetting to bring their tablets to school or meeting the school bus on time. Others are struggling with the new rules: staying 6 feet apart, walking one way down the hall, eating lunch without their friends.

Embattled San Francisco school board agrees to act dignified |
The scandal-plagued San Francisco school board agreed to new contract terms with the district’s superintendent that require members to focus on reopening schools and act “in a dignified and professional manner,” the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
The agreement Tuesday was added to a deal Superintendent Vince Matthews made with the Board of Education to remain on the job for another year after he announced his retirement in March.
