Orange County Parents And Students Confront Ethnic Studies; School Districts Look to Potentially Expand Offerings |
The debate over ethnic studies is heating up and pitting some parents against each other across Orange County school districts. Across California, there is a huge reckoning with how U.S. history is being taught in classrooms and what is being left out. Some are calling on schools to put a greater emphasis on teaching the historical plight of people of color and expanding the scope of U.S. history through a course called ethnic studies with hope that a better understanding of such history could help quell racism and hate.

USDA extends free meals through next school year |
The U.S. Department of Agriculture will continue reimbursing schools and childcare centers for free meals to all students regardless of their income through the 2021-22 school year, USDA officials announced Tuesday. Meal service waivers such as the “Seamless Summer Option,” which made it possible for California districts to distribute millions of grab-and-go meals to students since campuses closed due to Covid-19, will be extended through June 2022, according to a USDA news release. |

Modesto, Turlock schools move to in-person graduations, with COVID limitations |
In-person graduation ceremonies are back, Modesto City Schools has announced — with the caveat that Stanislaus County remains in the red tier of the state's COVID-19 monitoring system. Adhering to state health and safety protocols, there will be eighth-grade promotion and 12th-grade graduation ceremonies that stick to originally scheduled dates. Times and locations may have changed to accommodate limited capacity and to "ensure the graduating class can stay together in one ceremony for each school rather than splitting into multiple ceremonies," the district reported.

How Schools Can Help Kids Heal After A Year Of 'Crisis And Uncertainty' |
Kai Humphrey, 9, has been learning from home for more than a year. He badly misses his Washington, D.C., elementary school, along with his friends and the bustle of the classroom. "I will be the first person ever to have every single person in the world as my friend," he said on a recent Zoom call, his sandy brown hair hanging down to his shoulder blades. From Kai, this kind of proclamation doesn't feel like bragging, more like exuberant kindness.
