Orange County students take home top honors at annual science and engineering fair
Although the typical days of halls packed with students, spectators and judges are still on hiatus, that didn’t stop over 300 Orange County students from participating in the 2021 Orange County Science and Engineering Fair. Held virtually for the second year in a row, the Orange County Science and Engineering Fair — or OCSEF — fosters scientific literacy and critical thinking skills for all students throughout Orange County.

Irvine high schooler rescues leftover bagels for the hungry
The payoff for Nithin Parthasarathy came last fall, when he pulled up to the Orange County Rescue Mission in Santa Ana. The junior at Irvine’s Northwood High School had weathered numerous bumps in the road in pursuit of his vision of turning shops’ leftover bagels into food for the hungry. Today, he runs the non-profit Zero Waste Initiative, with eight volunteers who gather and distribute the otherwise trash-bound bagels daily — more than $100,000 worth so far. He was one of 10 youths nationwide to be awarded a $500 Earth Day Scholarship this month from the National Society of High School Scholars Foundation.

Costa Mesa sues over plans for new theater at Estancia High
Estancia High is set to join the Newport-Mesa Unified district’s three other high schools in having a more versatile, modern theater for student performances and events. But plans for the $32 million, 46,000-square-foot venue could be slowed by a lawsuit the city of Costa Mesa filed challenging the district’s conclusion that an environmental review of the project isn’t necessary.

How San Diego’s 10 Largest Districts Spent Millions in Coronavirus Aid
San Diego County public schools used their first major wave of COVID-19 relief funds last year to make huge investments in distance learning and opted to spend far less on things like protective gear or coronavirus testing, a new Voice of San Diego analysis of state data shows. The same trend was seen among K-12 public schools statewide, though some of the region’s largest districts forged a different path – spending more on protective gear, redirected personnel or crisis counseling.

Ethnic studies could be the ‘low-hanging fruit’ of American education reform, but California showed how creating a curriculum can get sucked into the culture wars
California officials have touted their 900-page creation as a model for the nation as people across America grapple with the role race and racism plays in our everyday lives. The curriculum is expected to become the backbone of a pending California bill mandating ethnic studies as a high school graduation requirement. For Theresa Montaño, however, a professor of Chicano studies at California State University, Northridge, the curriculum is not something to be emulated.
