In Irvine, students experience what it’s like to have a disability
On a rainy Wednesday morning, about 90 Irvine students felt their name in Braille, read a passage to discover what a person having dyslexia might see and used picture symbols to communicate just like a person with autism would. To instill empathy and foster compassion, the Irvine Unified School District Virtual Academy organized an Abilities Awareness Fair for its elementary students to experience visual impairments, reading challenges, fine motor challenges, emotional dysregulation and more.

Corona del Mar High pool likely out of commission for months
Student-athletes at Corona del Mar High and local residents alike have been displaced, as the pool on campus is closed due to a pump failure. That’s nothing new for high school pools, but the timeline for this one is much longer than usual — it could be closed for up to six months or more. Newport-Mesa Unified School District spokeswoman Annette Franco said the Marian Bergeson Aquatics Center will be unavailable due to a “catastrophic failure” of equipment. A malfunction in the vertical turbine pump assembly has resulted in irreparable damage to the pump, siphon tube assembly and pump motor.

Social media has some significant upsides for teenage girls, survey finds
Researchers, legislators, therapists and concerned parents for years have been voicing alarm about the effects of social media on teenage girls. But how do girls themselves feel about social media? It’s mostly thumbs up. More than 80% of adolescent girls surveyed by Common Sense Media said that social media has a positive or neutral impact on themselves and their peers, according to a report the Bay Area-based nonprofit released today.

Dyslexia bill advances in state Senate committee
Over the objections of the state’s largest teachers union and English learner advocates, a bill requiring schools to screen K-2 students for dyslexia unanimously passed the state Senate Education Committee on Wednesday. Senate Bill 691, which now advances to the Senate Appropriations Committee, would require schools to identify children at risk for dyslexia, a reading disorder that affects up to 20% of the population, including Gov. Gavin Newsom and the bill’s author, Sen. Anthony Portantino, D-Burbank.

California high schools are adding hundreds of ethnic studies classes. Are teachers prepared?
On a rainy Friday afternoon at Santa Monica High School, ethnic studies teacher Marisa Silvestri introduced her class to the rap song “Kenji.” As singer Mike Shinoda narrated his family’s experiences in the Japanese American incarceration camps of World War II, Silvestri’s class fell silent. After the last bars of music filled the room, the class set to work analyzing the song’s lyrics, agreeing that Shinoda humanized a historical event some students previously knew little about.

Extra pay could lure experienced teachers to poorer schools. Why California won’t do it.
Located in Richmond just north of Berkeley, Stege serves the highest percentage of students from low-income households in the West Contra Costa Unified School District but its teachers on average have less experience than all but one other school. And that experience disparity isn’t unique to Stege and West Contra Costa — it plays out in schools throughout California.

Tough love: Study shows kids benefit from teachers with high grading standards
They might not want to hear it, but it’s true: Students assigned to teachers with tougher grading policies are better off in the long run, research suggests. According to a paper released last fall through Brown University’s Annenberg Institute for School Reform, eighth- and ninth-graders who learned from math teachers with relatively higher performance standards earned better test scores in Algebra I.

Culture war embroils Orange Unified school boardroom
In Orange County this winter, a school district has been torn by debates over what kids learn in classrooms and how much control parents have, echoing national conversations about critical race theory, book banning, LGBTQ topics, and sexual education. The Orange Unified School District educates about 26,000 students in well-regarded public schools. But tensions in the politically purple community have been on the rise for years.

School board considers options to address declining enrollment, looking to avoid campus closures
Superintendent Don Austin told the board that there were three options he believed to be at the top of the list and should be considered more immediately: Allowing Palo Alto city employees to enroll their children in the district. Lowering the required number of hours that a district employee has to work for their children to be eligible to attend Palo Alto schools. Creating an "early enrollment deadline," after which families may not get assigned to their neighborhood school.
