OCDE NEWSROOM

Orange County students celebrate National Read Across America Day
March marks National Reading Month, and school districts from across the county are raising awareness about the importance, value and fun of reading by celebrating Read Across America Day. Created by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1998, and celebrated annually on March 2, National Read Across America Day is an initiative aimed at encouraging stronger reading habits among children. While the pandemic may have changed the size and scope of local celebrations, that didn’t stop teachers and students from dressing up as their favorite book characters — or donning their coziest pajamas — and spending the day reading and celebrating literacy.

COVID-19 update: Education-specific vaccination clinics open to all school employees with an appointment
With the next phase of the state’s vaccine rollout underway, the county’s first education-specific vaccination clinic opened to all TK-12 school employees on Monday. Appointments are required for the Orange County Department of Education’s OC School POD, which is short for “point of dispensing,” and vaccine supplies are still limited. On Monday, about 400 vaccinations were administered at the POD, which will continue to operate daily, excluding Sundays. Now the site is open by appointment to any school employee who serves transitional kindergarten through grade 12, and a new POD is set to launch later this week in the Capistrano Unified School District.

OC Schools to Reopen Kindergarten to 2nd Grade Classrooms, or Risk Losing State Grant Money
Gov. Gavin Newsom and the state legislature are pushing schools to begin reopening classrooms by the end of the month, or risk losing out on some of the $6.6 billion targeted to the reopening efforts. The Governor said classrooms will reopen for more grades when counties hit the Red Tier — the second most restrictive tier in the state’s reopening system. Orange County currently sits in the most restrictive Purple Tier and could soon be moving into the Red Tier if case rates continue to improve.

Should kindergarten be mandatory in California?
Long before the first day of school in first grade, some children may be far behind their peers. That was true even before the pandemic, but a heightened awareness of learning loss has added a sense of urgency to the matter of how to close achievement gaps in the early grades.

After year of ‘peril’ for democracy, scholars release new framework for history and civics in schools
2020 was the year that U.S. history, and clashing perspectives on it from left and right, became a campaign issue. Now a group of educators has unveiled a teaching tool that they hope will help lower the temperature. Through a collaboration funded by grants from the Department of Education and the National Endowment for the Humanities, a group of civics and educational institutions spent the last 18 months drafting a new strategy to revamp instruction in American history and civics — and hopefully drain some of the vitriol from our national discourse. The results, released as a report and pedagogical “roadmap” under the title “Educating for American Democracy,” were made available Monday.

LAUSD School Buses to Start Going Electric
The wheels on the bus go round and round, as the popular children’s song goes, but in Los Angeles, some of them will be electric. On Monday, the Los Angeles Unified School District announced it has purchased 10 zero-emissions school buses from the Canadian manufacturer Lion Electric. The zero-emissions LionC model buses seat 72 passengers and can travel up to 155 miles on a single charge. They also integrate wheelchair lifts. The company expects to deliver them to LAUSD this spring. The district, so far, has one electric bus in its fleet.
