Will a Local OC School District Ban an Iranian Revolution Book?
Some parents and students in the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District are concerned their elected trustees will keep a book about the Iranian revolution out of a high school classroom. The book is called “Persepolis: The Story of Childhood” – an autobiographical graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi which depicts her life growing up in Iran during the overthrow of the Shah and the Iranian revolution in the late 1970s – that could be core and extended reading material for high schoolers.

What we do (and don't) know about teacher shortages, and what can be done about them
Many districts across the country are grappling with teacher shortages large and small. Limited federal data show, as of October 2022, 45% of public schools had at least one teacher vacancy; that's after the school year had already begun. And schools that serve high-poverty neighborhoods and/or a "high-minority student body" were more likely to have vacancies.

Parents challenge SF school district’s math policies in court
San Francisco Unified School District’s controversial math placement and sequencing is now being challenged in court. Parents have voiced their frustrations over the district’s math placement policy. Education scholars questioned its validity. Families for San Francisco, a parent advocacy group, released a lengthy report asking for a full peer- reviewed assessment of the policy’s successes after submitting numerous public records requests. All have said that the district’s move to delay algebra 1 courses in eighth grade and cease accelerated math class options in middle and high schools are widening the equity achievement gap rather than narrowing it.

Carver Elementary in Long Beach to reopen after norovirus outbreak
Carver Elementary School in Long Beach will reopen Wednesday following a three-day closure prompted by a norovirus outbreak. In a letter sent to parents Tuesday, school principal Monica Manipon said the campus underwent a “deep cleaning” on Saturday by an outside company, followed by another cleaning by Long Beach Unified School custodial staff on Tuesday. Objects such as blocks that are frequently handled by students were also disinfected, she said. Although the campus is reopening, students showing any symptoms of norovirus were asked to remain home until 48 hours after they are free of symptoms.
