California cancels sideline cheerleading, citing coronavirus concerns |
The roar of the crowds is muted this spring, as high school sports continue their return to Southern California. There are a handful of spectators in the stands, sometimes in assigned seating, always 6 feet apart. But under new state guidance, there are no cheerleaders on the sidelines at many games. “Football players are allowed on the field with no masks, but cheerleaders are not,” Riverside mother Allison Yrungaray said. “It just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.”

Pomona-born astronaut answers students’ questions from orbiting space station |
Elijah Cole, a student at Etiwanda High School, asked Pomona-born astronaut Victor Glover to name the most beautiful thing he’s seen during his time aboard the International Space Station. Glover, 44, a 1994 graduate of Ontario High School, which along with Etiwanda High is part of the Chaffey Joint Union High School District, didn’t hesitate: “The Earth is by far the most beautiful thing I’ve seen,” began Glover, during a live broadcast Thursday, March 18, from inside the orbiting station 254 miles above the planet. |

CDC Says Schools Can Now Space Students 3 Feet Apart, Rather Than 6 |
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has updated its guidance for schools. On Friday, the agency announced it "now recommends that, with universal masking, students should maintain a distance of at least 3 feet in classroom settings.” Previously the guidance stated, "Physical distancing (at least 6 feet) should be maximized to the greatest extent possible." The new guidelines still call for 6 feet of distance between adults and students, as well as in common areas, such as auditoriums, and when masks are off, such as while eating.

California adopts first statewide ethnic studies curriculum |
As America reels from its latest spate of deadly hate crimes and racism, the California State Board of Education on Thursday approved the nation’s first statewide ethnic studies curriculum for high schools, saying the teaching of discrimination and oppression has never been more important. After an eight-hour public meeting Thursday, board members voted unanimously, 11-0, to approve the curriculum it hopes will become a model for other states to follow.
