COVID-19 update: Orange County returns to the red tier |
For the first time since November, Orange County is back in the less restrictive red tier of the state’s COVID-19 monitoring system. The California Department of Public Health announced Friday that 2 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in some of the state’s hardest-hit communities. With that equity measure met, and with our county falling below the three major thresholds of California’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy, OC officially moved to the red tier on Sunday, two days earlier than expected.

Students make unexpected art with musical instruments |
Most people would think taking the strings off of a guitar would defeat the purpose of the instrument, but students from Orange County have found ways to create pieces of art without strumming any strings. Instead, these artists have been painting their acoustic canvasses as part of the Yamaha Cares Upcycle Art Project.

California is offering rapid COVID-19 tests to students and educators in an effort to support school reopening efforts, state education officials announced this week.
State officials have about 5 million BinaxNOW antigen tests that schools can purchase that provide results within 15 minutes and cost $5 per test, said Daniel Thigpen, deputy superintendent of communications for the California Department of Education.

UTLA head touts tentative school reopening agreement as a win for organized labor |
The head of United Teachers Los Angeles touted the tentative agreement reached this week with the Los Angeles Unified School District as a win for organized labor and said the “gold standard” set in terms of expectations for school reopenings will serve as a national model for other unions still bargaining to safely return to campuses. UTLA was the last employee group to reach a return-to-school agreement with the district, despite mounting pressure over the past several months by parents, business leaders and health professionals calling for classrooms to reopen.

Distance learning changed California education. What’s here to stay? |
As schools across California welcome back more students on campus, some distance learning practices look likely to survive the pandemic. School closures exposed deeply embedded inequalities in California education, as well as the crucial lifelines that schools provide for their communities. But in nearly 12 months of distance learning, teachers pushed through difficult days to find new solutions that kept kids learning during an upended school year. |

Education saw a lot of changes in the past year, here’s what could be here to stay |
A year ago, teacher and instructional coach Susan Ferguson left her classroom as the coronavirus pandemic gained momentum in Southern California, not knowing when she or her students would return. In recent weeks, families across the region have rejoiced with the news some campuses will reopen as the state’s infection rates trend downward, celebrating what they hope is the beginning of the end to home-based distance learning, the challenges it posed and the problems it exposed. |

LAUSD Could Reopen Its Doors In April — But Which Parents Will Send Their Kids Back? |
Juanita Garcia doesn't think her opinion counted for much in Los Angeles Unified School District's decision to reopen campuses next month. Garcia, whose adopted grandchildren attend San Fernando High School, believes LAUSD students are returning because parents from areas more affluent than the East Valley have demanded it. |

Whittier City School District board approves in-person instruction in mid-April |
Whittier City School District elementary school students will return to in-person instruction in the middle of April, nearly two weeks after the date Superintendent Maria Martinez-Poulin proposed earlier this week. The delay in returning to elementary school campuses apparently led to a tentative agreement with the Whittier Educators Association on the new schedule, Superintendent Maria Martinez Poulin said in a Saturday, March 13 morning telephone interview after the board voted 5-0 the night before on returning to in-person instruction.

Parents Rally to Reopen Secondary Schools Five Days a Week |
Nearly a year since schools closed due to COVID-19, many working parents will be relieved to hear there's light at the end of the tunnel, but parents like Johanna Minasian said it's a bit too late and not enough. Concerned about her son Mason's education, she's rallying to reopen schools five days a week as soon as possible. The LA School board reached a deal with the teachers union to reopen schools, so elementary students will be welcomed back to campus starting mid-April. Minasian's son is in the sixth grade and will have to follow a hybrid model along with other middle and high school students, and they won't start until late April or early May. |
