VIDEO | One Day: Inside an Adult Transition Program |
A new short film produced by OCDE’s Communications and Media Services unit follows one class of Adult Transition students at Harbor Learning Center (HLC) through a day in their life. Filmed prior to COVID-19 pandemic, the film captures the unique stories and personalities of students and educators and provides an inside look at the program’s skill-based academics and community-based work experience and instruction.
HLC staff, students and families gathered virtually on Feb. 26 to premier the 20-minute documentary to those who appeared in the film and work closely with the program. |

Santa Ana Unified schools remain closed due to COVID-19, for now |
The Santa Ana Unified School Board will decide later this month to potentially re-open Orange County’s second-biggest school district before the end of the school year.
District officials have until April 1 to say if they want to open at least some classrooms and become eligible for a piece of $6.6 billion aimed at helping schools re-open, most of the money coming from one-time state funding that Gov. Gavin Newsom and the Legislature agreed to last week. |

Capistrano Unified Starts Process for Possible Layoffs amid Financial Concerns |
As Capistrano Unified School District faces declining enrollment and projected deficit levels of spending, the district’s Board of Trustees approved a preliminary resolution for the “proposed reduction or elimination of certain services performed by certificated employees” during a special meeting last week. The potential layoffs are of employees in approximately 91 full-time positions. The resolution authorizes providing notice to impacted employees by a required March 15 deadline, and the board will be asked to take final action on any layoffs during a May meeting. |

Eating disorders among teens surging during the pandemic |
Increased screen time and isolation during the pandemic are contributing to a rise in anorexia, bulimia, and binge-eating. Since the pandemic began, isolation, anxiety and hours upon hours of screen time have led to a surge in eating disorders among adolescents — at the same time that health education has been cut back in classrooms.
According to the National Eating Disorders Association, calls to their hotline have increased 40% since March 2020.

Study: Chicago tutoring program delivered huge math gains; personalization may be the key |
Across two randomized controlled trials conducted in the 2013-14 and 2014-15 school years, ninth and tenth graders in Chicago who received regular tutoring saw significant improvements on both math test scores and course grades. While the upward movement was sizable in both experiments, the gains were much larger during the program’s second year of implementation.
