COVID-19 update: School employees in Phase 1B begin registering for vaccinations |
The Orange County Department of Education on Friday officially opened the registration window for school employees who live or work in OC and want to get vaccinated at an education-specific clinic. Demand was so high that OCDE’s website briefly crashed when registration began at 3 p.m., but the site was back up shortly afterward. Over the next 30 minutes, 2,400 appointments were scheduled through the online Othena system. New appointment times are expected to be added next week.

Newsom, lawmakers forge deal – with $6.6 billion in financial incentives – to get schools open |
Gov. Gavin Newsom and legislative leaders are scheduled to give an update this morning on the state’s school reopening efforts, during which they are expected to announce an agreement that would offer billions of dollars in funding for schools that reopen by the end of March.
Newsom and lawmakers have been negotiating for two months over bringing kids back to school, amid mounting pressure to reopen campuses closed nearly a year by the coronavirus pandemic. Newsom will be joined by Senate leader Toni Atkins, Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon and other legislative leaders at an 11 a.m. news conference to provide updates on the efforts, and vaccine distribution.
Atkins’ office confirmed that the agreement sets aside $6.6 billion for schools that return to in-person instruction by March 31. |

Friday night lights is back as high school football gets a restart |
Across California on Friday, full football practice was officially allowed in counties that had reached adjusted COVID-19 case rates of 14.0 or fewer per 100,000 people. At private and public schools in Los Angeles and Orange counties, teams began a two-week preparation process for games next month. The fall season was delayed on July 30, then delayed again in December because of the coronavirus.

Reopening high schools gets ugly, divisive in Bay Area district where rich and poor mix |
In San Mateo County, a high school reopening plan is emotionally fraught, revealing deep divides between parents, teachers and rich and poor areas. Reopenings of high schools in the Bay Area provide a window into conflicts sure to play out in Los Angeles and other parts of California as more counties move into less restrictive tiers. Schools in wealthier areas tend to be more willing — and better prepared — than their poorer counterparts to restart in-class instruction, at least in L.A. County, as The Times revealed in an investigation this month.

LA County, city, school-district sites gear up for Monday’s massive new wave of vaccine-seekers |
With an estimated 1.2 million more people eligible for coronavirus vaccines on Monday, March 1, Los Angeles County will operate with its largest-ever infrastructure for delivering the sought-after inoculations this week. But health officials said residents will have to be patient while vaccine supplies remain thin and sporadic, and while staff are being trained to tighten up procedures to ensure only eligible people receive shots. County health officials expressed hope that conditions will improve dramatically, however, with Saturday’s federal approval of a single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

San Jose Unified sets April target date for reopening schools |
Nearly a year after Bay Area schools shuttered in response to the escalating COVID-19 pandemic, San Jose’s largest school district has set a target date of April 21 to reopen its schools for all grade levels. The target date is contingent on the county moving into the orange tier of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s reopening framework and on school staff getting fully vaccinated, according to a district newsletter released Friday evening. Starting Sunday, educators across Santa Clara County are eligible to begin booking appointments to receive their first dose of the coronavirus vaccine.

Fresno Unified joins new COVID-19 testing pilot designed to return students to campuses |
Fresno Unified School District is joining a second COVID-19 testing pilot program “infinitely” cheaper than what board members approved a couple of weeks ago. This program also is designed to get students back to campuses quicker, which has now become a possibility for the district. Superintendent Bob Nelson confirmed the partnership with the California Endowment, which spearheaded the pilot program at 10 other districts in the state, in a Friday interview with The Bee’s Education Lab.

California parents continue to disagree on return to school as Covid-19 cases decline |
As more California school districts reopen campuses, many are finding themselves in the middle of a contentious debate among parents over safety and other priorities.
Part of nearly every school district’s reopening plan has involved asking families directly when they would like to return to campus and under what circumstances. Now, school districts are facing the difficult realities of weighing a wide range of concerns while building trust among Black, Latino, special education and other parent groups who say their voices have been stifled.

For Some Black Students, Remote Learning Has Offered A Chance To Thrive |
Back when school was in person, Josh Secrett was always tired. "I used to come home and just lay down and go to sleep for like hours," the eighth-grader says. "Wake up for dinner, go to bed." Josh's mom, Sharnissa Secrett, says teachers at his Portland, Ore., school would sometimes discipline Josh for small things, like talking when he wasn't supposed to. Those interactions would hang over him the rest of the day.
