Schools line up to reopen as LA County lays out the path |
With coronavirus case rates in Los Angeles County now below a level deemed acceptable by the state to open grade schools, students at close to 300 elementary schools were poised to get back to class and hundreds more schools could open in a matter of weeks. For those schools that do reopen, they will need to follow strict guidelines and only 25% of the total student body is allowed on campus at any given time. Youth sports can also resume for outdoor conditioning. Applications were now open. And if schools don’t hear back in seven days, they are free to reopen.

As L.A. and S.F. ponder public school reopenings, how do their COVID numbers compare? |
The intense debate continues over how to safely reopen schools in California and across the country during the pandemic. Los Angeles County health officials have just cleared elementary schools for possible reopening after a significant drop in coronavirus cases. Los Angeles now allows schools to reopen with a waiver, which San Francisco already allowed. Both counties must follow state health guidelines about reopening. But data shows that with momentum building in Los Angeles for returning students to campuses, coronavirus case rates there are still considerably higher than in San Francisco.

District-led parent mentor program promotes path to college for English learners |
Parents of English learners in one Southern California high school district are training fellow parents to help their children graduate high school and go to college.
Part of a three-month training program called Padres Promotores del Camino al Éxito Universitario, or Parent Mentors for the Road to College Success, the parent-to-parent support reaches across the eight schools in Whittier Union High School District in Los Angeles County and could serve as a model for other districts across the state.

LAUSD has safety measures in place, but much work remains before return to campus |
Long before public health officials announced this week that elementary schools in Los Angeles County can finally reopen because the county’s daily rate of new COVID-19 cases has fallen low enough to meet reopening standards, officials in the Los Angeles Unified School District had submitted its plan for bringing students back to campus to the state and county. And it’s already prepared its schools for the eventual return of students and staff by purchasing personal protective equipment, installing hand sanitizing stations and new air filtration systems, and reconfiguring classroom layouts so desks are spaced apart. But such actions are only part of what needs to happen before the district can actually throw open its campus doors.

LA County Is Eligible To Reopen Schools. But LAUSD Teachers' Union Wants Vaccines, Fewer COVID-19 Cases |
For the first time since the pandemic began, L.A. County has reached a threshold for reopening elementary schools. But that doesn't mean Los Angeles Unified, the nation's second-largest school district, will be inviting students back anytime soon.
The LAUSD teacher's union, United Teachers Los Angeles, is pushing back against calls to reopen until teachers are eligible for vaccines and COVID-19 cases drop even lower.
