Faced with soaring Ds and Fs, schools are ditching the old way of grading
Alhambra High School English teacher Joshua Moreno is working to align grades with what students are learning, not on behavior, deadlines or quantity of work. A few years ago, high school teacher Joshua Moreno got fed up with his grading system, which had become a points game. Some students accumulated so many points early on that by the end of the term they knew they didn’t need to do more work and could still get an A. Others — often those who had to work or care for family members after school — would fail to turn in their homework and fall so far behind that they would just stop trying.

Students to Vote on Changing Anaheim High School’s ‘Colonists’ Mascot as Pushback Continues
It’s been exactly a 100 years to the day since Anaheim High Students first decided their mascot name — the Colonists. Now, a century later, Anaheim High School students will vote to either keep the controversial mascot, get rid of it — or keep the name, but change the imagery behind it following growing community calls to replace “the colonists” mascot and the symbols associated with it, according to the school website. The vote is also taking place amid Native American Heritage Month and pushback from community members and some of Orange County’s indigenous residents who say the mascot is a racist symbol.
