Students take to Laguna Niguel street corner to perform ‘Hamilton’ |
On a Laguna Niguel corner a Broadway show unfolded. Well, at least the content was straight from Broadway: the hit musical “Hamilton.” The performers were straight from George While Elementary School. A fifth grade class under the direction of teacher Michael Young performed several numbers from the show on Saturday morning out front of the Starbucks.

The ‘absolutely essential’ role of Black counselors on campus |
Amid calls for schools to diversify their teaching staffs, some are saying those efforts should extend beyond the classroom — to the counseling office. The needs of Black students, advocates argue, are too often overlooked by non-Black middle and high school counselors. Black students are more likely to be placed in classes that don’t prepare them for college or a career, subject to harsher discipline and less likely to have their mental health needs addressed, research shows.

Play may have the potential to reduce inequity among early learners, report finds |
One of the answers to reducing inequity and addressing mental health concerns among young children may be as simple as providing more opportunities to play, some experts suggest. A growing body of research is making the case for play as a way to boost the well-being of young children as the pandemic drags on and concern over learning loss grows stronger, as the Hechinger Report notes.

Families that choose to keep their students out of school for a mental health day on November 12 will have their absence marked as “excused.”

‘Not a pipe dream’: New report offers roadmap to eliminate internet affordability gap for students |
Almost two years into the pandemic, over 18 million households lack high-speed internet access. Even if it’s available, they can’t afford it, according to a new report from nonprofit EducationSuperHighway. CEO Evan Marwell estimates about half of those families include school-age children. “The narrative is that it’s been about building infrastructure in rural America,” Marwell said, but added, “after decades of investment, affordability is now the biggest problem.”
