OCDE’s virtual counselor symposium encourages local educators to reset and recharge |
“Reconnecting, resetting and restoring” was the theme of the 2021 Orange County Virtual Counselor Symposium hosted Nov. 10 by OCDE’s Educational Services team.
Drawing nearly 600 K-12 and community college counselors, along with district administrators, site leaders and support staff, the symposium featured well-known speakers and a wide variety of breakout sessions on topics including how to build resilience, systems and practices to support students with elevated needs, and establishing trauma-sensitive school environments for all students.

Orange County sees robust demand for child COVID-19 vaccines |
Orange County is reporting robust interest among parents seeking to get their young children vaccinated against COVID-19. Since vaccinations were made eligible for 5- to 11-year-olds last week, there have been 7,788 doses administered, Dr. Regina Chinsio-Kwong, a deputy health officer for Orange County, said Wednesday. Three thousand doses were administered on Tuesday alone, which Chinsio-Kwong called “a great number.”

Will School Vaccination Sites Help Close the Latino COVID-19 Gap? |
Now, Santa Ana Unified School District officials are hoping to make getting vaccinations easier on some of Orange County’s hardest hit residents by launching shot clinics for children 5 and up. “There’s a lot of different schools that actually have that going on,” said Dr. Regina Chinsio-Kwong, pediatrician and deputy OC health officer, in a Wednesday news briefing. She also said schools are partnering with numerous organizations — from pharmacies to state health officials — to roll out the vaccine clinics. “Most of the schools that are actually offering the vaccines are in the areas that were hit the hardest — so there are several in Santa Ana, Orange, then even southern Orange County,” Chinsio-Kwong said.

Anaheim High Students Vote to Keep Colonist Mascot, District Officials Have Final Say |
Anaheim High School students voted to keep the name and imagery of their controversial mascot — the Colonists — amid pushback from some residents who argue it’s a racist symbol. But the decision will ultimately be up to the Anaheim Union High School District’s Board of Trustees who will be presented with the results of the vote in December. The vote took place during the Native American Heritage Month and at a time when school districts across Orange County are having a reckoning of sorts on how to teach history through the eyes of people of color by incorporating more of their stories in history lessons.

Most Americans give schools high marks on Covid safety, poll shows |
Most Americans — including more than two-thirds of Republicans — give their local schools good grades for balancing public health and safety with education, according to the latest Axios/Ipsos Coronavirus Index poll. Findings from this national survey may suggest Americans are less worried about Covid risks now, as Axios reported, and largely feel the delta variant is behind them. Asked how schools had done in terms of balancing health and safety with other priorities since the start of the pandemic, 71% of U.S. adults — and 75% of parents — said schools had done a good job as opposed to a poor job.

Latinos Remain Underrepresented In Higher Education. Men Especially, A New Report Finds |
Latinos make up the bulk of California high school students. But how many of them go on to college? And how do they fare once they launch their undergraduate careers?
The Campaign for College Opportunity, a nonprofit working to increase the number of students at two- and four-year institutions, released a report on Tuesday that delves into these questions. It found that while there have been important gains — including increased Latino enrollment in the University of California (UC) and the California State University (CSU) systems — there are still significant gaps that need to be addressed.

Poway Unified moves meetings online amid threats against board members |
Poway Unified School Board members on Monday voted unanimously to hold their next public meeting online because they continue to receive death threats from people protesting mask and COVID vaccine mandates. "Due to the continual imminent risk to the health and safety risk of staff and board members, we recommend that the board approve conducting the regular scheduled Poway Board of Education on Nov. 18, 2021, online via virtual video conferencing," said Poway Unified Superintendent Marian Phelps at a special meeting held on Monday.
