Fullerton’s Orangethorpe Elementary rocks new arts curriculum
Students and staff from Orangethorpe Elementary School in the Fullerton School District recently got to rub virtual elbows with rock ’n’ roll royalty during a live-streamed chat about an arts education initiative. Under Principal Dr. Ginger Frady, Orangethorpe has embraced the standards-aligned TeachRock curriculum championed by Steven Van Zandt, best known as the bandana-wearing guitarist for Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band. The program, created with the help of a board that included Springsteen, Bono, Jackson Browne and Martin Scorsese, provides free resources and lessons that leverage the history of popular music and culture to engage students.

It’s back to school in a very different way for Saddleback Valley Unified
Back-to-school day can be an emotional day for parents. Back-to-school day in 2020 was that, and then some. Tuesday, Sept. 29, was the first day children were back on campus in most of south Orange County, including at the Saddleback Valley Unified School District’s Linda Vista Elementary School. Like so many districts in the county and elsewhere, Saddleback Valley is going with the hybrid model that mixes some on-campus, in-person instruction with continued online distance learning so students can rotate time on campus and have more room to socially distance.

Limited reopening of L.A. County elementary schools allowed if waivers are approved
A limited number of elementary schools will be able to apply for waivers to reopen transitional kindergarten through second-grade classrooms under a Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors decision Tuesday that gives priority to schools serving higher numbers of low-income families. “As October approaches, it’s critical that we begin the process of reopening our schools at limited capacity,” said board Chair Kathryn Barger, who proposed the motion along with Supervisor Janice Hahn.

Sacramento County is now in lower coronavirus tier. When can schools reopen to students?
Schools can soon reopen for in-person instruction for all students now that Sacramento County has maintained low coronavirus infection rates, and moved down from the high-risk purple tier to the state’s red tier Tuesday. According to the state, schools must be in tier 2, the red tier, for at least 14 consecutive days before reopening. This would be the first time most students in grades TK-12 can return to Sacramento County campuses since March.

As schools reopen, COVID-19 cases rise in children
After preying heavily on the elderly in the spring, the coronavirus is increasingly infecting American children and teens in a trend authorities say appears fueled by school reopenings and the resumption of sports, playdates and other activities. Children of all ages now make up 10% of all U.S cases, up from 2% in April, the American Academy of Pediatrics reported Tuesday. And the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday that the incidence of COVID-19 in school-age children began rising in early September as many youngsters returned to their classrooms.
