Santa Ana Unified rolls out new “Wifi on Wheels” program
Santa Ana Unified School District this week rolled out a new “Wifi on Wheels” program aimed at providing 5G wireless access points to densely populated neighborhoods where students have been struggling to connect to the internet. According to a press release from SAUSD, five WiFi vans and busses were deployed on Tuesday as part of a pilot program, with an eventual goal of sending out as many as 150 buses and vans to travel and be placed in neighborhoods with spotty internet coverage throughout the district.

Orange County Rescue Mission transitioned its 61 children to distance learning with plenty of community help
In normal times, children living with their families at the massive and multi-purpose Orange County Rescue Mission attend classes at nearby Heritage Elementary School. But currently, they are on the same distance-learning path as so many school children in the county are. So a few rooms at the Rescue Mission have been converted into distance-learning classrooms. The 61 resident children, most of whom are elementary age with a few middle-schoolers thrown in, wear their matching school uniforms as they do their school work in socially distanced and moveable pods equipped with tabletops and comfortable chairs. The kids have Chromebooks and everything else required keeping their schooling going.

Between COVID-19 and layoffs, schools may not have enough teachers to get through the year
A potential exodus of older educators susceptible to the coronavirus and those with existing health problems may fuel already high turnover. A full third of teachers told Education Week they were somewhat or very likely to leave their job this year — compared with just 8% who leave the profession in a typical year.  Many substitutes also may quit. Now, new restrictions on foreign visas will make it harder for some states to import teachers from other countries to work in already hard-to-staff positions.

Los Angeles superintendent calls $150M COVID-19 testing effort ‘necessary and appropriate,’ but what he really wants is a national plan
While the Los Angeles Unified School District is not opening its schools anytime soon, the system’s massive COVID-19 testing and tracing initiative could be the “missing piece” that will allow students to return to classrooms and keep them there, said Superintendent Austin Beutner.
