OCDE releases public schools directory for 2020-21 |
|
The new Orange County Public Schools Directory is here. Each year, the Orange County Department of Education produces and distributes about 1,000 directories with contact information for all schools and districts in Orange County. The nearly-200-page book also includes OCDE’s divisions, community college districts, private schools, local colleges and universities.

COVID-19 update: Orange County eyes a jump to the less-restrictive orange tier |
|
The two main metrics used to track the county’s COVID-19 progress now fall within the range of the less-restrictive orange tier. As of Wednesday morning, Orange County was averaging 3.6 daily new cases per 100,000 residents, and the testing positivity rate was 3.1 percent. Both stats meet California’s threshold for the orange — or moderate — tier, which wouldn’t have much impact on school reopenings but could allow more indoor businesses to reopen with modifications. Based on the state’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy, however, a county must meet the next criteria for two weeks before advancing.

Huntington Beach City School District parents upset as classrooms remain closed
How soon is too soon when it comes to children returning to in-person instruction during the coronavirus pandemic? That depends on who you ask. About 75 parents and students attended a rally to reopen schools in front of the Huntington Beach City School District office on Tuesday, prior to a special board meeting. Many parents in attendance said they were frustrated that the Board of Trustees voted unanimously on Sept. 8 that students would return to school for hybrid instruction no earlier than Oct. 26.

As OC School Districts Push Forward With Reopenings, Concerned Teachers and Parents Push Back |

As local school districts continue moving forward with Fall reopening plans, some teachers and community members are beginning to pushback. More than a few teachers are talking about a potential strike or taking other actions if districts keep moving to open without assuring them there are adequate safety measures. “The sentiment is – if it comes to it – teachers won’t show up. A strike is the very last resort. None of us really want that,” one teacher from the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District told the Voice of OC.

BCSD unveils plan to gradually reopen its doors for in-person learning |
|
Bakersfield City School District released details about its plan to gradually open up its schools to special education, foster youth and homeless students, and English learners at a board meeting on Tuesday night. Deputy superintendent Mark Luque shared details with trustees of a plan that would involve bringing back up to 7,500 students and staff on school campuses in four phases that would take place over the next three months.

Fewer Students Are Going To Community College, Despite High Unemployment |
|
Enrollment at U.S. community colleges has dropped nearly 8 percent this fall, newly released figures show, part of an overall decline in undergraduate enrollment as students face a global pandemic and the worst economic recession in decades. Often, enrollment in higher education spikes in times of high unemployment and recession, as students seek additional job skills and postpone entering the workforce. But the pandemic has overturned those traditional calculations, according to preliminary data from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, which tracks college enrollment.

Novato teachers reject district’s hybrid teaching plan |
|
Teachers in the Novato Unified School District have rejected a hybrid plan to return to in-person classroom instruction, saying it presented too many operating challenges and coronavirus safety risks. Mariah Fisher, president of the 408-member Novato Federation of Teachers, said 55% of those who voted Tuesday on the district’s tentative agreement proposal for a hybrid plan voted no. The remaining 45% voted yes, she said. About 70% of the membership cast ballots.
