Census workshops hosted by OCDE aim to empower students, encourage participation
OCDE will host free workshops in Irvine and Huntington Beach next month to help teachers learn more about the next census count and develop census-related lessons for students. Organizers say the goal is to empower students as advocates who can discuss the importance of census participation in their homes and communities. History teachers, social science teachers and elementary teachers will be introduced to curricular options that cover all grade levels, and math instructors will learn how to create lessons and assignments based on census data through the “Statistics in Schools” curriculum.

Fullerton Joint Union High School District may ask voters again to finance improvements with a bond measure
Citing the need to update aging facilities, the Fullerton Joint Union High School District may put a referendum on the 2020 ballot asking voters to approve financing through the sale of bonds that would be repaid by an addition to property tax bills. A feasibility study recently reviewed by the school board said 62% of voters surveyed supported a measure that could raise $240 million after hearing arguments in favor and against the bond. The measure would need to get 55% of votes in favor for it to pass.

Montebello school officials accused of misleading investors in $100-million bond sale
Senior Montebello school officials misled investors about serious financial and management problems in the district when they marketed $100 million in school construction bonds, federal investigators said in charges announced Thursday. The actions could have led to more favorable interest rates, and lower costs, than the Montebello Unified School District would have otherwise received for its construction projects, said an official with knowledge of the investigation.

At Hemet Elementary School, yoga helps students cope with stress
Lena Abella-Saunders isn’t an actual yoga instructor, but the school counselor. Every Thursday, she runs four sessions of yoga classes during the school day. Students can request one of 20 passes for each session from teachers and other adult staff. For Abella-Saunders, it’s a way of getting counseling to her students in a new way. For her students, the sessions mix fun and relaxation with learning coping mechanisms.

Poverty levels in schools key determinant of achievement gaps, not racial or ethnic composition, study finds
While racial and ethnic segregation in the nation’s schools is strongly correlated with gaps in academic achievement, the income level of students’ families in a school rather than its racial or ethnic composition account for those gaps, according to a new study. The study, based on massive amounts of data from schools attended by nearly all of the nation’s black and Hispanic students, was conducted by Sean Reardon, a professor at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Education, and other researchers from Stanford, Pennsylvania State University and St. John’s University in New York City.

School boards group committed to tax plan despite legislative setback
Efforts to set ambitious targets for more K-12 funding and to ask voters to pass a higher income tax on the wealthy failed to make it out of the Legislature this month. But their backers are vowing to regroup and move forward in 2020. Having failed to interest legislators in placing its $15 billion Full and Fair Funding initiative on next November’s ballot, the California School Boards Association says it and its partners will collect signatures and do it themselves.
