OCDE is paving the pathway for career education across Orange County |
Since 2014, OCDE’s award-winning OC Pathways initiative has been creating self-sustaining partnerships to expand career pathway opportunities for Orange County students. This countywide consortium made up of OC’s 27 school districts, businesses, colleges and local agencies is creating work-based learning opportunities for students and empowering educators with 21st-century learning strategies. Pretty impressive right? But that is only part of the program.

County health director: No positive COVID-19 tests so far for elementary schools that opened with waiver |
On the eve of Orange County campuses being allowed en masse to reopen for in-person instruction, Orange County Health Care Agency Director Dr. Clayton Chau said on Monday, Sept. 21, that the schools that have returned already using the elementary school waiver have not reported any positive tests for COVID-19. “So far, we’ve not had anything yet, so knock on wood,” Chau said during a media brief held via Zoom. “And please understand, we make it very clear that the schools we approve that they have to let us know if they have any positive cases.”

Orange County Schools Can Reopen Starting Today, How Many Will? |
As of today, all of Orange County’s schools now have the option of reopening their classrooms after being closed down since the coronavirus pandemic began in March.
So far, only four districts are on the verge of opening classrooms but some teachers and parents are still concerned about the move and warily watching Covid infection numbers. The infection rates have improved significantly since the case spikes in June and July.

Schools in Santa Clara County can reopen for in-person classes today. So why aren’t they? |
After more than six months of state and county health mandates that kept students out of classrooms, Santa Clara County schools have the green light starting Wednesday to usher in a phased return to real face-to-face lessons. But the vast majority of school districts across the county are not yet biting at the apple — opting instead to stay the course through the rest of the semester. “Our parents and students need some semblance of structure and consistency during these times,” Cupertino Union School District Superintendent Stacy McAfee-Yao said. “I think that’s a very important part of delivering instruction, and we don’t yet have good reason to disrupt the daily patterns we’ve established.”

Riverside County’s move to red tier means schools could reopen in two weeks |
Riverside County got the green light Tuesday, Sept. 22, to move from the purple to red tier, when it comes to state coronavirus restrictions, but that doesn’t mean your child will go back to school tomorrow. However, it does mean that some children in schools across the county could begin returning to classrooms as early as two weeks from now.
California’s guidelines state that schools may reopen once a county has been in the red tier for two weeks.

California sees steep drop in reports of child abuse since school campuses closed |
No group in California reports more suspected cases of child abuse than teachers. And with teachers no longer seeing students in-person every day in most parts of the state, advocates say thousands of cases of child abuse may be going unreported. From April through August, reports of suspected child abuse statewide dropped 28% compared to reports during those same months in 2019, according to data from the California Department of Social Services provided to EdSource.

California schools chief’s ’end hate initiative’ prompts contrast with President Trump |
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond announced an “Education to End Hate” initiative Monday that he and others presented as an alternative to President Donald Trump’s call for “patriotic education” and as an antidote to acts of hate and hate speech that have risen during his presidency. A $1 million foundation donation kick started the effort. It will include resources and training grants for teachers to teach tolerance for differences in race and religion, virtual classroom sessions that will be broadcast next month on how to end discrimination, and a roundtable with political and social justice leaders on how to create safe learning environments.
