Santa Ana High principal claims ‘racist’ behavior by Aliso Niguel students at football game |
Santa Ana High School principal Jeff Bishop said his school’s football team and its students were the target of provocative and racially insensitive signs when it played at Aliso Niguel High School on Friday night. Bishop posted on Facebook that in and around Aliso Niguel’s on-campus stadium he saw posters that included offensive comments, including “Build the Wall,” a reference to President Donald Trump’s campaign promise that a wall would be built on the United States-Mexico border if he was elected. |

Judge orders Newport-Mesa to restore redacted material in report on Mariners |
An Orange County Superior Court judge this week ordered the Newport-Mesa Unified School District to restore many of the redactions in a report prepared by a firm that investigated what led to alleged inaccuracies in application for a prestigious academic award submitted by Mariners Elementary School. District officials filed the report with Judge Linda Marks in March so she could conduct a private court inspection to determine how much of the report could be made public. |

California bans for-profit charter schools |
California has just kicked for-profit management companies out of the charter school business. A bill signed into law Friday afternoon prohibits companies from managing or running the state’s taxpayer-funded, independently run charter schools. Assembly Bill 406 was inspired, in part, by an investigation by this news organization into allegations of profiteering at the expense of children’s educations. |

Both sides lobbying California governor on bill to delay school start time for teens |
California teens may get to sleep a bit later before heading to school, if the governor signs a bill requiring middle and high schools to start no earlier than 8:30 a.m. But not everyone agrees that allowing the legislature to dictate the starting times of local schools is good policy.
Middle and high school students in California start their school day on average at 8:07 a.m. according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a time that researchers say denies them badly needed sleep.
