Scientist helps give Long Beach Unified students a Jump Start through mentoring |
“Mentoring is really about being there for someone, offering guidance … opening up horizons, and just providing an open ear and an open heart,” Dr. Pamela Blake said. With a PhD in Geology and Geophysics, Blake has worked as a scientist at Boeing for 20 years. In her free time, she also provides expertise, giving guidance to local youngsters as a youth mentor in a program called Operation Jump Start (OJS). OJS was established to serve Long Beach Unified School District students.

A path to college for kids in juvenile detention |
At this juvenile hall, young people can take classes taught by community college instructors from nearby College of San Mateo through a program called Project Change. It’s one of only a handful of programs of its kind in the state, and it was one of the very first. Some California lawmakers have taken note. Now they’re pushing to bring college classes to juvenile detention facilities around the state.
