Disputed charter school ready to open in Newport-Mesa district |
With less than a week until the first day of classes, summer has about come and gone for students in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District. The same is true for students who will be attending the International School for Science and Culture, a public charter school that also will open Tuesday and operate on Newport-Mesa’s Harper Assessment Center site in Costa Mesa after getting approval for a charter facilities agreement from the district board of trustees in June.

California vaccine activists rally at Capitol in last-ditch appeal |
Hundreds of vaccine-skeptical families made a last-ditch appeal on Wednesday to California lawmakers, asking them to kill a proposed law that would restrict vaccine medical exemptions for children attending schools. The odds are against them. Gov. Gavin Newsom has already signaled that he’d sign Senate Bill 276, which is intended to protect children from preventable diseases and is backed by California lawmakers who believe “unscrupulous” doctors have been distributing exemptions for dubious reasons.

LA's Rich Kids Are More Likely To Take Advantage Of This SAT Loophole Than Poor Kids |
In Los Angeles County's richest communities, students have a little-known but powerful advantage over their peers in the county's poorest communities. In affluent enclaves, including Pacific Palisades, Palos Verdes, and Santa Monica, students are up to 77 times as likely to receive a federal disability designation that entitles them to extra help in the classroom. And that designation virtually ensures them an assist in the cutthroat competition to get into college: Extra time to take the critical SAT and ACT exams.

Cal State Wants Incoming Freshmen To Have More Math. Opponents Fear It Will Only Widen The Equity Divide |
Earlier this year, the California State University system floated a controversial proposal to require high school students to take an extra year of math — or a related class, like personal finance or coding — to be considered for admission.
The reactions from both critics and supporters were so heated that the system's trustees set aside three and a half hours for a public forum on Thursday at Cal State Long Beach.
