Annual Orange County Children’s Book Festival goes virtual |
|
Ready, Read, Go … virtual! For 16 years, the Orange County Children’s Book Festival has been bringing popular authors, illustrators, storytellers and entertainers together with families and children who share a passion for reading. But like many large-scale gatherings, the festival has been reimagined this year into a virtual event that still promises to be just as entertaining and inspiring. The Virtual Orange County Children’s Book Festival will launch on Monday, Sept. 14 and span over two weeks rather than the festival’s traditional one-day event.

|
First-grader Anthony White, 7, notched a bonus Tuesday morning, Aug. 11, as he picked up his computer tablet at Charles G. Emery Elementary School in Buena Park. The iPad he’ll be learning on came with a cover in one of his favorite colors. “Red!” Third-grader Noah Herrera, 8, was issued his iPad by the Buena Park School District at nearby James A. Whitaker Elementary School before meeting his teacher, Mrs. Robson. “She’s fun,” he said excitedly about his class leader for the next nine months.

Orange County opens COVID-19 test site to elementary schools hoping for in-person classes |
|
Orange County elementary schools seeking waivers to hold in-person classes will be able to send students or staffers who need a coronavirus test to county-run test sites.
The state is requiring counties on its COVID-19 monitoring list (including Orange County) to start the school year online for upper grades, but at the elementary level (from transitional kindergarten to sixth grade) schools may apply for a waiver to reopen campuses.

L.A. school board approves deal on remote learning; critics say it falls short on teaching |
|
With families anxious about the quality of online learning, the Los Angeles Board of Education on Tuesday unanimously approved a plan that will restore structure to the academic schedule while also allowing for an online school day that is shorter than the traditional one. The plan leaves some parents and advocates in the nation’s second-largest school system wanting more teaching hours. There also are parents who want fewer mandatory screen-time hours for their young children — a reflection of the complexities of distance learning and the widespread parent angst over the start of the school year next week at home, online.

OC Supervisors Seek to Boost Coronavirus Testing for Elementary Schools if Opened this Fall |
|
Orange County Supervisors decided on Tuesday to set aside some of the coronavirus testing at the Anaheim Convention center for elementary school teachers and students if state health officials allow classroom reopenings, which now depends on questionable countywide positivity rates. The elementary school reopenings hinge on rates, which a state test reporting glitch threw off by creating a backlog of nearly 300,000 test results statewide. State health officials will approve elementary school reopenings if Orange County has less than 200 confirmed cases out of 100,000 residents in a 14-day window.

Oakland teachers union ‘getting closer’ to agreement with district |
|
Oakland Unified and its teachers are “getting closer” to agreeing what distance learning could look like in schools this year, a union representative said Tuesday. After a bargaining meeting Monday night, the teachers’ union, the Oakland Education Association, made a counteroffer to the school district, and is waiting to receive one in return, said Chaz Garcia, second vice president of the OEA.

Machele Kilgore is a distance learning veteran. The principal and administrator helped start the independent study program in Orange County three decades ago, and finds herself answering a lot of questions for families looking for something non-traditional. "We are a public school through the Orange County Department of Education, so we're one option that families have that has been around for about 30 years, so we do have a bit of experience with the distance learning, independent study approach," said Kilgore.

Marin explores ‘learning hubs’ to aid remote instruction |
|
Students in underserved Marin neighborhoods could get a boost with distance learning if Marin installs new “learning hubs” at local libraries, community centers and churches.
The hubs, which are already in place in some San Francisco communities, are for school families who don’t have access to private tutors, homeschooling or micro-school pods, but whose children still need help with distance learning in the COVID-19 environment, said Ken Lippi, assistant superintendent for the Marin County Office of Education.
