Districts are offering online schools as option for the year
Most Orange County public schools are planning to open the fall semester with online-only learning, and hoping to resume on-campus instruction once the number of coronavirus cases dips. But not every student will be going back to on-campus instruction. Several school districts either have existing online, virtual schools or are creating new ones.  They are separate schools from the online learning that most students will be channeled through for the time being.

Saddleback to have on-campus stadium
An on-campus football stadium is going to be built at Saddleback High, according to school principal Edward Bustamante. Groundbreaking for the venue is planned for the summer of 2021. The stadium will include a synthetic track that will encircle the artificial turf field. Santa Ana Unified School District high schools with on-campus stadiums are Century, Santa Ana Valley and Segerstrom. Santa Ana uses Santa Ana Stadium for most of its football home games.

Coronavirus infections in kids: California sees alarming surge in cases in late July
Just as schools prepare for a new academic year amid a simmering debate over whether it’s safe for kids to return to classrooms comes worrisome news that infections among children are growing rapidly. A summary of publicly reported state data on children and COVID-19 by the American Academy of Pediatrics and Children’s Hospital Association found cumulative child cases reported nationally grew by 97,078 from July 16 to July 30, a 40% increase over that time. Much of that surge was in states in the South and West.

Oakland students log on, off within an hour in first day of class
For her first day of the new school year, 10-year-old Camila Lopez got dressed, ate breakfast and then headed to class — by logging on to a computer at home for the 8:45 a.m. start. In about half an hour, her school day was over. Camila, a fourth-grader at the Spanish dual-immersion Manzanita SEED Elementary School, introduced herself to her classmates and teacher and shared what she liked to do for fun — draw. Her sister, Nicole, 8, in second grade, sat nearby, waiting for her class to start at 9 a.m. Her class would be over in less than an hour too.

Some California districts, teachers struggle to agree on distance learning
Add fraying nerves of school district and teachers union negotiators and parents worried about distance learning to the collateral damage of the pandemic. Never, say those involved, have talks over teacher working conditions been this challenging.

Why some California classrooms will reopen for child care, though barred from in-person instruction
Some California students may find themselves in child care this fall in the very same classrooms they are barred from entering for in-person instruction. In an effort to meet the needs of working families, school districts in coronavirus hot spots across California are reopening classrooms as child care sites. But the contradictory rules for child care and in-person instruction has some parents questioning how one is safer than the other.

Data glitches delay whether California districts can seek waiver for in-person instruction
The state of California has processed a backlog of nearly 300,000 lab records related to Covid-19 and other cases, which will enable it to update its county monitoring list this week, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Monday. The data problems had resulted in an undercounting of the rate of Covid-19 infection and has led to the freezing on July 31 of a monitoring list that the state uses to tell localities whether they were ready to open schools or businesses. Without an updated list, districts have been unable to seek waivers in order to offer in-person instruction for elementary school students.

Demand for tutors skyrockets as pandemic lays bare inequalities in education
Help, in the form of an array of tutoring options, is available. Just this week, Los Angeles Unified School District announced a plan to provide free tutoring services and additional learning opportunities for students. By partnering with the newly formed non-profit Step Up Tutoring, the district will roll out free tutoring services for 500 students in three communities — Huntington Park, Fremont and Taft — as a pilot program beginning later this month when school resumes. The partnership with Step Up is part of a pledge by the district to spend between $5 million and $10 million on after-school tutoring programs. An additional $20 to $30 million will fund Saturday school options for extra support.

‘Months, Not Weeks,’ Until Students Can Return To San Diego Unified Schools
San Diego Unified School District officials announced Monday they were making preparations to get children back in schools, but were looking at a timeline of "months, not weeks," before that could become a reality. The district will adopt strict new standards to protect students, staff and the community from the spread of COVID-19 when schools convene in person again, District Superintendent Cindy Marten said during a news conference Monday. In the meantime, the district will begin classes remotely this month.

The New School Suspension: Blocked From Online Classrooms
Audrey Taito, a rising fourth-grader in Sacramento, California, can’t say exactly what she did to get her school email account blocked in the spring. She’s only 9. Online learning was new to her, and she found the technology confusing. Her teacher and school principal say she bombarded the district’s tech support department with requests, but she doesn’t remember it like that. She thinks she might have sent too many messages to a friend in a private chatroom, triggering some sort of automatic spam response.

Marin special education program prepares for in-person classes
If distance learning doesn’t work for many Marin kids in regular education classes, it’s much worse for those in special education. The Marin County Office of Education, which runs multiple small-cohort classes for Marin children who are moderately to severely disabled or cognitively impaired, said 92% of parents surveyed in May wanted their children back in class as soon as possible.
