9 high school exchange students from around the world return to Orange County 45 years later
They came together during the 1971-72 school year, as part of an exchange program hosted by the American Field Service, an international nonprofit fostering better relationships among nations. The teenagers attended high schools throughout central Orange County. This week, 45 years after that school year ended and they returned to their native countries, nine of the original 17 reunited in Orange County.

Early College High School celebrates completion of $6.8-million modernization
After nearly two years of renovations, a modernization effort for Early College High School is complete. In a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday morning on the first day of the new school year at the Costa Mesa campus, parents, students and officials of the Newport-Mesa Unified School District celebrated the estimated $6.8-million project that included installing new cooling and heating units, electrical systems, offices, ceilings, carpets, furniture and fencing.

New law strengthens safety training for high school cheer
Beginning this year, schools with competitive cheer teams must ensure coaches meet all the same safety training requirements as those who coach any other interscholastic sport in California. The mandate is the result of a 2015 bill that required the California Interscholastic Federation and the California Department of Education to develop guidelines, procedures and safety standards for high school cheerleading–thereby making competitive cheerleading an official high school sport.

Higher than expected turnout for LA College Promise
Community college officials overseeing the Los Angeles College Promise initiative are reporting that enrollment for the new program – which waives a year of community college tuition for L.A. Unified graduates – is much higher than expected at several of L.A.’s nine community college campuses.

Set those alarms, Orange County schools opening for new year
It’s still early August, but thousands of students across Orange County are already back inside classrooms. Anaheim Union High School District, Centralia School District, Cypress School District and Savanna School District were the first in the county to start their school year when classes began this week. The 24 other school districts in the county will begin classes now through Sept. 7.
