Orange County school districts to receive PPE for students and staff |
This week, the OCDE received its first shipment of personal protective equipment from the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, or CalOES, to be distributed to school districts across Orange County. CalOES, in partnership with the California Department of Education, will be providing school districts with an array of PPE including disposable and reusable masks, hand sanitizer, thermometers and face shields. The PPE will be allotted on a per-pupil, per-district basis as calculated using 2019-20 data on the number of students and on-campus staff including teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals, and auxiliary staff.

Brea Olinda school board honors Fanning family request to rename school |
After about four decades of being named for educator William E. Fanning, an elementary school in the Brea Olinda Unified School District will now be called the Falcon Academy of Science and Technology. Fanning’s descendants have emphatically rejected the idea he was a KKK member, saying it just doesn’t comport with the man they knew, with the educator who advocated against segregation in local schools, but last week they asked the school board to remove his name from the elementary school so the district can focus on more important things. The board unanimously voted to honor the family’s request on Tuesday, July 7.

Coronavirus spike jeopardizes opening of schools, L.A. County’s top health official warns |
The pending reopening of K-12 campuses is suddenly at risk because of the ongoing surge of coronavirus cases, and all public and private schools must prepare for students to continue learning entirely from home, Los Angeles County’s top public health official has told local education leaders. This sobering message was delivered by county Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer, in what she termed an “off the record” phone call Tuesday afternoon with district superintendents and others that was not intended for the media or the public. The Times obtained a recording of the call.

Newsom says reopening of California schools to be based on safety, not pressure from Trump |
Gov. Gavin Newsom said Wednesday that a decision on reopening California schools this fall will be made by local education and health officials weighing the state of the COVID-19 pandemic, and emphasized that he won’t be swayed by statements from President Trump urging campuses to bring back students quickly. The governor’s comments came as he warned that the number of coronavirus hospitalizations in California is continuing to surge, rising 44% in the last two weeks, and that another 111 Californians died from the virus in the last 24 hours.

Orange County School Districts Suspend Resumption of Sports Programs |
Weeks after some kids returned to the field for youth sports and team practices in Orange County, the county department of education is warning school districts that the state’s health department has not yet permitted them to do so. The Orange County department of education’s General Counsel Jeffery J. Riel sent out an advisory on Monday to superintendents across the county clarifying state orders regarding youth sports, including high school athletics conditioning activities.

New SF guidelines to reopen schools: Masks all day for students and teachers |
San Francisco health officials released guidelines Wednesday on how to reopen city schools that include a strong recommendation that all students and teachers wear masks and stay 6 feet away. Backed by several months of science on how COVID-19 is spread and what it takes to stop it, health officials point out that the adults are at greater risk of spreading the virus than students. They’re also at greater risk of falling seriously ill from it.

Christy Karwatt teaches social studies, but she’s been thinking more like a math teacher the last few days. At 61, the Sarasota High teacher is entering her 27th year in Florida's retirement system, and she loves her job. She had planned on teaching three more years to maximize her retirement payment. But as COVID-19 cases continue to spike across the state and the country, officials are pouring on pressure to reopen schools full time this fall.

For these Bay Area school districts, distance learning is back for the fall |
Despite demands from President Donald Trump that schools reopen their doors for face-to-face instruction this fall, some Bay Area school districts are opting to resume the distance learning approach they were forced to adopt this spring after shutting down.
Two of them — San Jose’s Alum Rock Union and East Side Union High school districts — encompass some of Santa Clara County’s ZIP codes hardest hit by COVID-19. They announced this week the vast majority of their students will start the 2020-2021 school year in virtual classes from home.

LBUSD releases plans for virtual and in-person learning options for the fall semester |
Long Beach Unified School District families will have their choice of education plans this fall, the district announced Wednesday, July 8, as the number of coronavirus cases in the city continues to climb. Elementary school families will have the most flexibility, with in-person, virtual and hybrid options for the fall semester, which begins Sept. 1. Middle school and high school families, meanwhile, will choose between virtual education and a hybrid plan in which students will attend in-person classes every other day.

When It Comes To Reopening Schools, 'The Devil's In The Details,' Educators Say |
Jeanne Norris is a teacher, the wife of a teacher and the mother of an 8-year-old in St. Louis. She'd love to send her son back to school in August. But, she says, "I feel like my government and my fellow citizens have put me in a position where it's not really in the best interests of our family." Norris has a long list of reasons why. She says she has taught in buildings where ventilation systems are outdated and malfunctioning, and even soap for hand-washing is in short supply.
