Tustin Unified’s by-precinct map proposals raise questions about ‘gerrymandering” |
Next week, Tustin Unified School District will undergo a major change when board members select a by-trustee map to replace at-large elections. In two of the four proposed maps, all five current trustees live in different precincts — a detail that has raised some eyebrows. Scattered complaints of “gerrymandering” have popped up in Facebook posts, emails to local media and communications with district board members. |

The long-debated issue of whether there should be term limits for Newport-Mesa Unified School District board members will be up to the public to decide. Teachers' union considers hard line on charter schools |
The USA’s largest teachers’ union is poised to take a hard line against charter schools, publicly funded but often privately run K-12 schools that now educate about one in 16 public school students. Meeting in Boston this week, the National Education Association (NEA) is expected to vote Tuesday on an overhaul of its policy statement on charter schools. A policy statement is the highest-level position the union can adopt on an issue. Though it is 160 years old, NEA has policy statements on fewer than a dozen issues. |

Charter school co-founder elected president of L.A. school board |
Newly elected Los Angeles Unified school board president Ref Rodriguez says his goals include bridging the divide between charter-backed and union-backed members.
As the co-founder of PUC Schools, a network of charter schools in Los Angeles, Rodriguez brings a unique perspective to a board that is now controlled by candidates elected with the backing of charter advocates.

LAUSD's new board members aren't interested in 'massive charter school expansion' |
Forget what you’ve heard: the Los Angeles Unified School Board's two newest members say they're not here to usher in a new golden era for charter schools.
Nick Melvoin and Kelly Gonez both benefited from record outside spending by pro-charter school political groups on this spring’s school board campaign. After they take their oaths of office on Thursday, they'll become the third and fourth board members to receive the California Charter Schools Association's exclusive endorsement — enough, in theory, to form a majority on a seven-member board.
