Parents sue Huntington district after boys were told not to pass out religious fliers at school |
|
A Huntington Beach mother and father are suing the Huntington Beach City School District after their sons initially were told they couldn’t pass out fliers encouraging their classmates to take their Bibles to school. The federal lawsuit, filed Jan. 7 in U.S. District Court in Santa Ana, came after the principal of Peterson Elementary School told Holly Bausch in October that her sons Micah and Nieko couldn’t pass out the Bring Your Bible to School Day fliers during campus instructional hours — including class time, recess and lunch — because of the papers’ religious content.

UC system accepts record number of California applicants |
|
The University of California opened its doors to the largest and most diverse class of Californians ever for the fall semester of 2019, according to preliminary data released Monday. The system’s nine undergraduate campuses offered seats to 71,655 California freshmen, nearly 600 more students than last year. Overall, UC admitted 108,178 freshmen among 176,695 freshman applicants. It also admitted 28,752 transfer students from a pool of 41,282, including the largest-ever class from the California Community Colleges.

Plan to expose all students to physics missing one element — teachers |
|
As California schools move to implement new science standards, they are under pressure to offer more physics instruction creating a demand for teachers in a subject area where there is already a severe shortage. The California Science Framework, adopted in 2016 by the State Board of Education to support the Next Generation Science Standards, recommends that all high school students take biology, earth/space science, chemistry and physics.

Cal State Planning Public Forum On Proposed Change To Math Admissions Requirement |
|
A proposal in the works by California State University would add a fourth year of math to admission requirements. With concerns that the plan would have a discriminatory effect on students of color, Cal State trustees will meet this week to plan a special forum to allow as many people as possible to weigh in.
