‘No confidence’: State adviser slammed Sac City Unified officials in fiscal crisis, emails show |
An independent fiscal adviser blasted the Sacramento City Unified School District this spring while it was calculating huge cuts to jobs and programs, saying he had “no confidence” in its business staff or their data. “It appears to me your staff has again demonstrated that they don’t have the capacity or willingness to produce accurate data,” Mike Fine of the state-created Fiscal Crisis and Management Assistance Team said March 7 in a string of emails to Superintendent Jorge Aguilar and board President Jessie Ryan, expressing distress over the data the district was presenting in its second interim budget report.

Tuition-Free College Could Cost Less Than You Think |
Making a tuition-free college education available to everyone who wants one is an immensely worthwhile — and realistic — goal, a Harvard economist says. But free college isn’t really free — someone has to pay for it. Eliminating tuition at all public colleges and universities would cost at least $79 billion a year, according to the most recent Department of Education data, and taxpayers would need to foot the bill.
That is a lot of money, but it is a smart and humane investment, and could be more affordable than you think.

Amid budget deficits, Bay Area district braces for cuts, spending reserves |
The West Contra Costa Unified School District could soon face up to $30 million in budget cuts or be forced to dip deeply into its reserves to close deficits that surfaced last month in budgets for the current year and next year. Like nearby Oakland Unified, the district is grappling with uncertain numbers for its 2019-20 budget after its chief business official resigned in May, forcing it to seek help from the county to create its budget report.
