Whittier City schools appear to have lured Buena Park administrator to be superintendent |
|
An assistant superintendent for a Buena Park elementary school district is expected to be named superintendent for the Whittier City School District on Tuesday.
Whittier City school board members in Monday telephone interviews said they like the experience, energy and background of Maria Martinez-Poulin, a 24-year-educator who now is assistant superintendent of curriculum and Instruction in Centralia School District.

Teenagers who frequently use digital media are more likely to develop attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, according to a new study. In 2014 scientists at the University of Southern California, led by Adam Leventhal, a professor of preventive medicine and psychology and director of the USC Health, Emotion and Addiction Laboratory at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, embarked on a two-year study to discover whether the amount and frequency of digital media usage among teens was associated with the occurrence of ADHD. |

This charter school wants to focus on dyslexic students. But will the county allow it? |

A charter school whose curriculum would focus on the needs of dyslexic students may not get off the ground in Fresno, after a review by the County Superintendent of Schools recommended denying its petition. Kelly English, director of Augustus Academy, who is dyslexic herself, said the school’s program would be especially helpful for dyslexic students, but that everyone can benefit from learning their way. |

Oakland charter school approved amid concerns over fiscal impact on district |
|
A California State Board of Education decision to approve a charter school over a school district’s objections laid bare the limits of the state’s charter laws. Oakland Unified had refused to approve a charter for the proposed new Latitude 37.8 high school in part because the district faces a fiscal crisis and can’t afford to lose more students, along with the state aid that follows them when they go to charter schools. |

Montebello Unified’s adult school accused of fraud, mismanagement and misappropriation |
|
An audit released Tuesday questioned $268,000 paid to Montebello Unified employees at its adults schools — some for working when no class was in session or for classes with as few as one student; it recommends further review by prosecutors. The payments were made over the last five years without district and/or board approval, according to the audit. It described an almost shadow human resources department, in which select teachers and non-teaching employees were tapped for extra assignments in Adult Education. |

According to one study, nearly one in three adolescents (ages 13-18) now meets the criteria for an anxiety disorder, and in the latest results from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 32 percent of teens reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness. |
