County superintendent issues statement on OC Board of Education meeting |
Orange County Superintendent Dr. Al Mijares on Monday issued the following statement in response to the OC Board of Education’s planned meeting and school reopening recommendations: There has been some confusion, and understandably so, over the role of the OC Board of Education and our agency, the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE).

OC Board of Education votes to support return to school without social distancing, masks |
On the same day that Los Angeles Unified and San Diego Unified district administrators announced their schools would start online only in the fall, the Orange County Board of Education went a different way. The conservative-leaning board voted Monday night on its own guidelines: for students to return to campus, without social distancing or face masks. The lone dissenting vote was Trustee Beckie Gomez, also the only board member to wear a mask during the meeting. The board has no power to direct any of Orange County’s 27 school districts to follow its guidelines, which are in direct opposition to those issued by the Orange County Department of Education, state public health officials and others.

Orange County education leaders want schools to reopen without masks or social distancing |
Orange County education leaders voted 4 to 1 Monday evening to approve recommendations for reopening schools in the fall that do not include the mandatory use of masks for students or increased social distancing in classrooms amid a surge in coronavirus cases.
The Board of Education did, however, leave reopening plans up to individual school districts.
Among the recommendations are daily temperature checks, frequent handwashing and use of hand sanitizer, in addition to the nightly disinfection of classrooms, offices and transportation vehicles. |

L.A. Unified will not reopen campuses for start of school year amid coronavirus spike |
Los Angeles campuses will not reopen for classes on Aug. 18, and the nation’s second-largest school system will continue with online learning until further notice, because of the worsening coronavirus surge, Supt. Austin Beutner announced Monday.
The difficult decision became unavoidable in recent weeks, Beutner said, as coronavirus cases have skyrocketed in Los Angeles County, and the district cannot come close to protecting the health and safety of some half a million K-12 students and about 75,000 employees.

‘It’s really devastating’: Students feel rites of passage denied as schools stay closed into the fall |
The first day of school loomed larger than ever this year. Inflated with both anticipation and fear amid a great pandemic, it was to be the release from five months of confinement, the end of what largely amounted to the longest, hardest and most boring of summer breaks in generations.
So for many students, the momentous decision on Monday to postpone the opening of schools in Los Angeles landed with a dull thud of disappointment. No catching up with old friends or finding new ones, no sports, no dances, no plays, no Friday night lights, no messing around in the halls, no vigorous classroom discussions — no end in sight.

Los Angeles County offers guidelines for schools that decide to reopen |
Los Angeles County public health officials have announced new guidelines for school districts that choose to resume in-person learning in the fall amid the coronavirus pandemic, warning that things will look very different on campuses when students and teachers return. Officials said Monday that children in L.A. County’s 80 school districts would be required to wear face coverings, with such exceptions as during nap time, and the use of hand sanitizer will be encouraged, especially among younger students.

Will California students fill classrooms in the fall? Newsom says it depends on the district |
Without a definitive statewide decision on whether schools should reopen their physical doors during the coronavirus outbreak this fall, each California district is pursuing its own path. Local officials are left balancing teachers unions concerns over members’ safety with the demands of some parents eager for their children to return to school. California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday a statewide approach doesn’t work in a state with more than 1,000 districts serving more than six million children.
“Each district is unique and distinctive,” he said.

With the end of summer break just weeks away and coronavirus cases surging statewide, Bay Area school districts are racing to cement their plans and advise families if, when or how their campuses will reopen to students. Fresno-area parents fear sending kids back to school — and they fear keeping them home |
As COVID-19 cases rise in the central San Joaquin Valley, some parents say they are afraid schools won’t be safe to reopen in the fall.
But other parents say they’re even more worried about their children falling behind if campuses remain shuttered and students are forced to take classes exclusively online.

Schools in Los Angeles, San Diego won’t reopen for in-person learning next month |
Schools in California’s two largest districts — Los Angeles Unified and San Diego Unified — will not reopen for in-person learning when the school year begins next month, the districts announced Monday, saying that it would not be safe to do so while the coronavirus continues to spread. Students in those districts will instead continue to learn at home, as they did for the final months of last school year.

A California district’s plan to boost remote learning includes in-person ‘student support hubs’ |
The West Contra Costa Unified school district in the San Francisco Bay Area will resume online classes for almost all students on Aug. 17, followed by an unusual plan to slowly get students back into school buildings — starting with those who are most in need of services. Under its “student support hubs” plan, the district will bring small groups of students back onto campuses when it is safe to do so with instructional aides, child care staff, teachers and others to help the students with distance learning, officials said at a virtual town hall meeting Friday.

Masks for kids? Schools confront the politics of reopening |
On one side are parents saying, let kids be kids. They object to masks and social distancing in classrooms this fall — arguing both could hurt their children’s well-being — and want schools to reopen full time. On the other side are parents and teachers who call for safeguards that would have been unimaginable before the coronavirus pandemic: part-time school, face coverings for all or a fully online curriculum.
