Scholarships awarded in honor of late Corona del Mar High graduate Matt Olson |
Matt Olson is remembered in the Corona del Mar High School community as a kind and caring person. Olson, a 2019 CdM graduate who was captain of the boys’ volleyball and basketball teams, died on Aug. 24, 2019, just days before starting his freshman year at USC. He was hit by cars while walking on the 110 Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol. Out of tragedy, the Olson family found a way to pay forward Matt’s giving nature. The M.O. 23 Forever Scholarship Fund, which has his jersey number in the name, was started soon after his death. From that fund, nearly $10,000 was recently awarded to seven CdM and Newport Harbor graduates.

Should you send your child back to school? Parents are stressed and divided |
Weeks before the start of school, Californians are deeply split over whether campuses can safely reopen amid the ongoing coronavirus surge — caught in a collective moment of uncertainty and anxiety also reflected among teachers and education leaders.
Parents, as indicated in a new statewide poll, are grappling with the prospect of stressful, less effective learning at home — not to mention continued child care woes — and fears that children exposed at school could bring COVID-19 and its potentially deadly risks into their home.

Irvine High School Students Fight Food Insecurity By Tackling Food Waste |
What happens to the uneaten bagels at coffee shops? One high school student in Orange County asked this very question before embarking on a mission to rescue bagels that weren’t purchased and get them to people in need. The Zero Waste Initiative started a little before the Coronavirus pandemic began by Nithin Parthasarathy, a 15-year-old student from Northwood High School in Irvine. The initiative takes extra uneaten bagels from Bruegger’s Bagels franchises to various organizations across the County that feed those in need.

What are the CDC school guidelines Trump wants changed amid COVID-19? These are the highlights. |
To better understand any possible update, USA TODAY reviewed several documents and guidelines on the CDC's website of the guidance already issued to K-12 schools. The CDC says these documents should supplement but not replace state and local guidance, laws and other regulations. Throughout the guidelines, the CDC also says that schools should be in regular contact with state and local health officials on their plans and review local laws and rules.

'Not enough teachers to reopen': School districts expect booming demand for substitutes |
As if school officials didn't already have a long enough to-do list before reopening classrooms this fall amid a global pandemic, here's one more thing to add: deepening their pools of substitute teachers. Schools across the nation struggle during normal times to find enough substitute teachers to fill classrooms when the assigned teacher calls in sick or must attend a training session. With increased teacher absences expected due to COVID-19, the need for subs is even greater.

Teacher’s union calls for LAUSD schools to remain closed with classes 100% online |
The board of directors and bargaining team for the union representing teachers in the Los Angeles Unified School District is recommending campuses remain closed when the new school year begins Aug. 18, and the union as a whole is expected to take the same stance. United Teachers Los Angeles wants the district to focus on online classes for the fall semester. “We all want to physically open schools and be back with our students, but lives hang in the balance,” UTLA President Cecily Myart-Cruz said Thursday. “Safety has to be the priority. We need to get this right for our communities.”

California school superintendents navigate safety concerns, conflicting guidance as they plan to reopen schools |
California school superintendents are negotiating an obstacle course of regulations, parental angst and safety concerns as they make plans to do something never done before — reopen schools during a pandemic. School officials are balancing ensuring the safety of students and teachers with the need to offer child care for parents who must work. They are weighing sometimes conflicting guidance from the state, local health departments and education organizations, and trying to appease parents who have differing opinions about whether their children should wear masks or practice social distancing.

Second charter school approved for Montebello Unified |
A second charter school for Montebello Unified was approved Thursday, July 9, this time by the state Board of Education after the local school board said no.
TIME (Teamwork, Individualization, Mastery and Extension) Community School, a high school, is expected to open July 2021. Just last month, the Los Angeles County Board of Education overruled the Montebello Unified school board’s rejection of another charter request, from KIPP SoCal Public Schools. It plans to establish a transitional kindergarten through eighth grade charter school in the district. Like TIME, it is set to open in 2021.
