Court rejects Trump bid to end young immigrants’ DACA protections |
The Supreme Court on Thursday rejected President Donald Trump’s effort to end legal protections for 650,000 young immigrants. For now, the young immigrants retain their protection from deportation and their authorization to work in the United States.
The 5-4 outcome, in which Chief Justice John Roberts and the four liberal justices were in the majority, rejected administration arguments that the 8-year-old Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program is illegal and that courts have no role to play in reviewing the decision to end DACA. The program covers people who have been in the United States since they were children and are in the country illegally. In some cases, they have no memory of any home other than the U.S.

Cavalcade of seniors from six high schools ride through Newport and Costa Mesa |
June gloom may have been in the sky, but it was all cheers on the ground as hundreds of students from Newport Beach and Costa Mesa rode in a graduation parade Wednesday afternoon. Half of the cavalcade of students, led by police, fire and World War II-era military vehicles, started at Newport Harbor High and went past Back Bay High School. They met up with more students at Costa Mesa High and ended at Estancia High School.

L.A. school board to consider phasing out school police under intensifying demands |
The Los Angeles Board of Education next week will consider phasing out the school police, essentially eliminating the department over the next four years, a proposal that comes after more than a week of intensifying demands to do so by student advocacy groups and the leadership of the teachers union. Two other competing school board resolutions also call for a review of police operations, but not an outright termination of the department.

Orange County School Districts Consider Black Lives Matter Resolutions, Changes to Curriculum |
A host of Orange County educators, parents and alumni are pushing local school district boards to change their course offerings to teach kids about Black history and Ethnic studies. The push for change comes in the wake of global protests against police brutality following the killing of George Floyd, a black man, at the hands of Minneapolis police. School boards are now considering adopting Black Lives Matter resolutions as members of the community push for a greater emphasis on teaching Black history in Orange County.

County officials to schools: Prepare to make students wear masks |
A six- or seven-day school week, a longer school year, holding classes in a community theater or in a school cafeteria — these are some of the suggestions county school officials made for schools to reopen in the coming months. San Marcos Unified to lay off after-school staff |
After-school staff for San Marcos campuses will receive layoff notices, the school board voted Tuesday night, prompting distressed responses from parents who said they need the daycare and support for their children. School board members said they hope to find a way around the cuts, and intend to reinstate the program as soon as possible.
As the schools prepare to reopen in the fall under new COVID-19 guidelines, officials plan to discontinue the Kids on Campus program, which provides after-school childcare and enrichment, because of space restrictions on campus.

California schools chief ‘applauds’ renaming schools |
California schools chief Tony Thurmond said Wednesday that schools named for Confederate leaders or other racially charged figures exacerbate feelings of racial inequality, and he commended schools that have opted to rename themselves.
“I applaud those schools that have taken these conversations up,” he said, and those who have worked “to rename schools in ways that are more thoughtful and more sensitive.” Thurmond’s comments, in response to a question at a media briefing, came after the Berkeley Unified School District Board unanimously approved a plan last week to rename two schools named for founding fathers who were slaveholders.

San Joaquin County Office of Education releases new guidance for reopening schools |
The San Joaquin County Office of Education announced the release of new guidance for area schools as they prepare to enter the 2020-21 academic year. The guidance was developed in close collaboration with the county’s 14 school district superintendents and approved by the San Joaquin County Public Health Officer. The SJCOE document — 2020-2021 School Year Planning: A Guide to Address the Challenges of COVID-19 — is intended to be used as a tool for schools and districts to reopen while minimizing health risks as they develop and implement their own plans for the new school year.
