Big variations per student in what California districts will get in federal stimulus aid |
By July 1, California school districts should get some financial relief from their share of $1.65 billion in federal stimulus funds that the state is expected to receive. Educators are hoping it will be the first installment of a bigger influx of federal aid later this summer that will let them shore up their budgets from expected cuts in state funding, as well as cover additional expenses from the coronavirus.

Early school start time proposed by Gov. Newsom not far from existing district calendars |
Gov. Gavin Newsom’s proposal last week that schools consider reopening schools earlier — in late July or early August — to make up for lost learning time shocked many in the education community, and took parents by surprise.
Many school administrators had begun planning for just the opposite. Some were considering opening later because of the multiple uncertainties the coronavirus poses for providing a safe learning environment not only for children but the entire school community. But Newsom’s conception of an earlier start time is less of a revolutionary change in the school schedule than it first appears.

LA Unified summer school will offer intensive help, math and English and enrichment |
It will be the first time in district history that all students can attend summer school. An expanded summer school session in Los Angeles Unified will be offered in three parts to help make up for lost learning during school closures, Superintendent Austin Beutner said Monday. One of those programs will be “an intensive set of classes” offered to a small number of students who are struggling the most, while other courses including math and English will be available to all students, Beutner said during a televised speech.

Can California schools put safety measures in place in time to open early? Many district leaders skeptical |
Gov. Gavin Newsom’s suggestion to reopen schools — aimed at mitigating the learning loss resulting from school closures that began in mid-March in response to the coronavirus pandemic — means some schools would start the school year earlier than usual. There are concerns that schools will not have enough time and funding to stagger school schedules and create social distancing and related health plans to keep students and staff safe if campuses are reopened in late July or early August.

With BCSD learning packets not being graded, parents ask 'what's the point?’ |
The Bakersfield City School District announced on Facebook that students won't be graded on the work completed in the packets or online coursework, per Gov. Gavin Newsom's executive order. "Students grades are to be held harmless, meaning students should not receive a lower grade than the grade they had when the district closed school on March 17," the post read.
The ruling, however, posed a question from parents: why even bother doing the work?

Latino superintendents: ‘Going back to normal’ not their goal after coronavirus crisis |
Richard Carranza, chancellor of New York City public schools, says he doesn’t allow people to talk about “going back to normal.” Normal, he said in a virtual convening hosted by the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents, was a system in which social and economic privilege determined too much about the quality of a student’s education — from funding, to access, to expectations.

Despite ‘COVID Slide’ Concerns, Most Educators Oppose Extending Upcoming School Year to Stave Off Negative Effects, Survey Finds |
With school campuses closed nationwide due to the coronavirus pandemic, researchers have warned that students’ time away from the classroom could lead to disruptive learning loss — an anomaly dubbed the “COVID slide.” But most teachers oppose extending the upcoming academic year to confront academic setbacks, according to the results of a new survey. Sixty-five percent of teachers and 54 percent of school administrators said they want to begin the upcoming academic year with normal schedules, according to results from a recent online survey conducted by the Collaborative for Student Success, a nonprofit advocacy group that promotes school accountability efforts. |
