Southern California school districts react to new guidelines for reopening |
Eleven L.A. County school districts are pushing back, calling recommendations impractical. State education leaders and officials with local agencies such as the Orange County Department of Education still are waiting on state health officials to weigh in before releasing their own recommendations on what schools need to do when they reopen. “Each district will customize a plan that will make sense for them,” said Al Mijares, superintendent of the Orange County Department of Education. |

Light shows, special gifts, streets of cheers: Orange County is making sure graduating seniors feel special |
With the absence of traditional graduation ceremonies, communities across Orange County are looking for innovative ways to celebrate the Class of 2020. Cap-and-gown-clad seniors cruising the streets of Rossmoor looked like a graduation ceremony on wheels as the neighborhood’s homeowners association held a socially distanced celebration for Los Alamitos High School. Some 550 vehicles carrying graduates wound their way through the city early Wednesday. The two-hour parade traveled past four elementary schools and two parks where teachers and staff cheered on the graduates.

What schools will look like when they reopen: Scheduled days home, more online learning, lots of hand-washing |
Imagine, for a moment, American children returning to school this fall.
The school week looks vastly different, with most students attending school two or three days a week and doing the rest of their learning at home. At school, desks are spaced apart to discourage touching. Some classrooms extend into unused gymnasiums, libraries or art rooms – left vacant while schools put on hold activities that cram lots of children together.

With masks and social distance, these special ed students have already returned to school |
While educators across the state are struggling over how and when to bring students safely back to school in the fall, teachers in at least one California classroom have already figured it out. At San Jose Middle School, located in Novato in Marin County, Cindy Evans’ class for special education students has been in session for ten days. Educators interviewed by EdSource say they know of no other similar effort in the state.

Classes outside, face coverings and one-way hallways: How Los Angeles schools may reopen |
Many schools in districts in Los Angeles County could have a totally different look this year: masked students sitting six feet apart, walking single file along hallways and up and down stairs. They may eat lunch at their desks or with drastically fewer students in the cafeteria, and some could attend classes outdoors. Those are among the recommendations of a county-wide task force of district leaders for reopening schools for more than 2 million students this fall.

Masks, social distancing, smaller classes could be on tap for California’s 2020-21 school year |
The novel coronavirus pandemic will shape what the 2020-21 California public school year looks like, when it begins in a little more than two months.
“We’ve learned from the experience of (the 1918 flu) pandemic,” State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond said during an online press event Wednesday morning, May 27. “We know that we can flatten the curve by doing a few simple things,” like social distancing, hand washing and using face coverings. |

What Could Schools Look Like When They Reopen? Here's What LA County Education Officials Say |
A task force convened by the Los Angeles County Office of Education released a framework Wednesday with guidelines for the county's 80 school districts as they plan for when, how — and maybe whether — to reopen school campuses. The 43-page document lays out how different schools could operate in the 2020-21 school year, though ultimately, the decision on reopening campuses is up to the leaders of each district and charter.

New guidelines suggest massive changes |
Blocked-off play structures. Classes reduced to half or a quarter of their normal size. Kids eating lunch at desks spaced 6 feet apart. Scheduled class time for handwashing. Students allocated one basketball or hula hoop to play with alone during recess. Books put in storage because they can’t be sanitized frequently enough. And, of course, face masks. This may be the reality for many of California’s 6 million public school students when campuses reopen in the fall, guidelines released Wednesday by the Los Angeles County Office of Education and earlier in May by the Sonoma County Office of Education suggest.
