In Fullerton, school lunch comes with a side of a comic book |
More than 4,000 comic books are, or will soon be, in the hands of Fullerton School District students, thanks to a donation from Enrique Muñoz, owners of Comic Hero University. Teachers and staff at the district, which teaches 14,000 K-8 students, were busy one recent afternoon distributing about 2,500 comic books at the district’s 17 grab-and-go meal sites. |

Cal State Fullerton freshman registration numbers exceed expectations in uncertain times |
At Cal State Fullerton, freshman registration for the fall has exceeded university goals — at a time when the coronavirus pandemic is casting confusion over how much of the coursework will be online and how much families, faced with economic upheaval, can afford to pay for college. The university has seen an upswing in freshman enrollment over the last several years, and had a target of about 4,500 new freshmen to enroll this fall. But when the enrollment numbers came in after the May 1 deadline, they showed that 5,200 to 5,500 high school students were looking to come to CSUF in the fall.

'We are not anticipating a common opening': Calif. superintendent on public schools |
California school districts will decide on an individual basis when to open for the next school year, Superintendent of Public Education Tony Thurmond said in a virtual news conference Wednesday. Thurmond offered a look at how the reopening of schools might unfold and emphasized decisions will be made in a way that supports the safety of students and staff. The state will provide best practices for reopening and guidelines with built-in flexibility, allowing districts to reopen in a way suited to their individual communities.

AP exam glitch means high schoolers may have to retake tests: ‘My daughter was hysterical’ |
The College Board said on Tuesday that approximately 1% of the more than 1 million students who took the exams, given in 38 subjects, encountered technical difficulties. That’s roughly 10,000 kids who prepared, paid $94 each and sat through the 45-minute online program. The company said it will let students make up the exams in June if they have technical difficulties. Its website states that how and when a school collects and refunds fees from students remains a school-level decision.

A look at distance learning strategies for success | EdSource webinar |
While most school districts across the United States are providing students with educational resources, many have not been able to connect all their students to the internet and are still struggling to put attendance and grading policies in place, according to research from the Center on Reinventing Public Education. Researchers from the center, high school history teacher Manuel Rustin and Jeffrey Garrett, the senior director of Leadership Development at the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools, discussed the state of education during the coronavirus pandemic in a webinar hosted by EdSource on Tuesday. More than 1,000 viewers participated in the webinar.

Education: Class is now in session — at home and online |
With schools closed, quite possibly until fall, education has moved from the campus into the home. Many schools and districts are rolling out distance learning plans to continue instruction for students, but parents likely will have to fill in the gaps when it comes to keeping their child engaged. Here are a few popular apps and websites to consider for students in several age groups:

With School Buildings Closed, Children's Mental Health Is Suffering |
Nightmares. Tantrums. Regressions. Grief. Violent outbursts. Exaggerated fear of strangers. Even suicidal thoughts. In response to a call on social media, parents across the country shared with NPR that the mental health of their young children appears to be suffering as the weeks of lockdown drag on. Most U.S. states have canceled in-person classes for the rest of the academic year. This week in Senate testimony, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, sounded a cautionary note on the prospect of reopening school buildings nationwide, even in the fall.

San Diego’s High School Seniors Consider Alternative Ways To Celebrate Graduations And Proms |
Under a best-case scenario, students would have in-person graduations in late July or early August. Those especially vulnerable to the coronavirus would be urged to stay home. The next option would be an in-person ceremony with graduating classes broken up into smaller groups to ensure safe social distancing. The least desirable option would be a virtual graduation. The proposal passed unanimously at Tuesday night’s board meeting.
