Laguna Beach’s Top of the World Elementary reaches new heights in environmental education |
Top of the World Elementary School is, well, on top of the world.
The Laguna Beach campus recently learned that it’s one of only four schools in the entire state to be named “Green Achievers” through California’s Green Ribbon Schools environmental recognition program. That’s the highest distinction possible, honoring sites that exemplify efforts to conserve resources while promoting health and environmental literacy. And with it comes a nomination to compete in the U.S. Department of Education’s Green Ribbon Schools recognition program.

Pot taxes across U.S. shore up school budgets, drug-prevention efforts |
States with legal pot have collected more than $1.6 billion since the newest sin taxes went into effect in 2014, with the money paying for everything from public schools to mental health services to programs that deter convicts from re-offending.
But that revenue could see explosive growth now that President Trump has signaled a more agreeable stance toward legal-weed states, striking a deal with Republican Sen. Cory Gardner this month to respect Colorado's marijuana operations.

Bay Area district offers K-8 options to help keep students from leaving the district |
For the past six years, students at Mira Vista Elementary in Richmond have had the option to finish 7th and 8th grade in their neighborhood school instead of moving onto middle school or leaving West Contra Costa Unified. “I like Mira Vista because it’s almost like one big family and we’re all just really close and we’re close to our teachers,” said 8th-grader Brooke Roberts, 14, who lives in El Cerrito. “You get more one-on-one time with them and with the students.” |

Homeschool Supporters Crush Plans for Greater Oversight |
Two legislative proposals aimed at providing greater oversight of California's estimated 15,000 homeschools died this week after a massive lobbying effort waged by parents and homeschool supporters. Homeschools are private schools under California law. Neither the state, county or local district has any legal responsibility to monitor conditions, or oversee academics. Kids don’t have to meet standards or take standardized tests. |
